Proclamation
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month is a month to celebrate and pay tribute to the contributions of Asian/Pacific Americans to American history, society and culture; and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill in June of 1977. On March 28, 1979, President Carter issued Presidential Proclamation 4650, proclaiming the week beginning on May 4, 1979 as Asian/Pacific American Heritage week; and
on May 1, 2009, President Obama issued Presidential Proclamation 8369 proclaiming May 2009 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; and we celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders that enrich our history, society and culture, we must also acknowledge a darker aspect of the AAPI experience in America —structural discrimination, prejudice and injustice that most recently manifested itself in racist attacks on Asian Americans related to the COVID -19 pandemic; and
Asian American and Pacific Islanders have distinguished themselves as leading researchers in science, medicine and technology; innovative farmers and ranchers; distinguished lawyers, judges and government leaders; in the arts, literature, and sports; as war heroes who defended our country from fascism; and peacetime healthcare heroes currently on the front lines of the pandemic; and
today more than 24 million Asian American and Pacific Islanders live in the United States and through their actions, make America a more vibrant, prosperous, and secure nation.

Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that I, Hildy Stern, Mayor of the City of Manhattan Beach, California , on behalf of the City Council and the residents of Manhattan Beach, do hereby proclaim May 2022 as
Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
and encourage all citizens to learn more about Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, and work to combat racism and xenophobia as we celebrate this month.

Dated this 3
