That’s good Samir. I wrote a similar letter.

Hello Commission members,
I live at 568 30th street, our family has been here for 20 years. We are 4 houses up from the grass strip. Last week your Commission entertained a proposal to put in a cement bike or pedestrian path along the west edge of the grass park. https://www.thembnews.com/2024/03/12/484062/residents-ponder-sand-dune- park-options
This small grass park has been used as a play yard and sports practice area for families in the neighborhood. There is no other grassy area around. However there are several concrete paths throughout the city.

Putting a concrete walkway would narrow the already narrow strip, and children aren't good at staying off paths next to play areas, so there is a hazard for bikes to zip through amid children playing and focussed on the ball instead of bike and pedestrian traffic. This would interfere with our quiet enjoyment of the park.

Please do not move forward with putting in a cement path. It would be a hazard for the children who have no other place nearby to play within the neighborhood.

We should look to expand grass areas
and parks, not pave over them further.

Sincerely,
Samir Shahin

Dear Commission members,
I would like to echo Samir’s objection. We are Samir’s neigbors. We are a family of 6 and my 2 youngest boys spend their afternoons at the green patch playing soccer. Adding the cement path will create a hazard for them and for the pedestrians. Like many other kids, our boys love to play and run around.

When we play soccer, we usually install the net in front of the fence so that when they shoot, worst case scenario the ball goes above the fence and we just have to walk around to grab it. If there was a cement path, we will have two choices: either we keep the same setup and the pedestrians and cyclists will have to walk around kids playing defeating the purpose of the path or we change the orientation of the net which in my mind is a non starter as the ball could now go on the streets. Additionnally, I do not understand what is the objective of adding this path in the first place, which problem are you trying to solve? This area is used as the extended backyard for families and cyclists already use it as do pedestrians without a cement path.

If you really wanted to add a path, then I would advise looking at the other side of the fence and do it there so that you do not touch the actual surface of the green patch, which is not that big compared to the number of families living in this neighborhood.

Dear Sirs,
My name is “Bo” Dean and I live at 594 31st st . I have lived here on 31st st for many years ( since
1979 ) and have really enjoyed SAND DUNE park and its Greenness thru the years. I have loved the very Quaint natural feeling of The Park ………….So Much untouched Nature yet so close to the Beach makes for a very very beautiful unique Park.

Thru the years I have played with Many KIDS at that Playground and understand that Upgrading some of the equipment
Could be a good thing but I do not want to see the GREENNESS of the Park changed ---AND I am firmly AGAINST Paving a portion of the Grassy strip between 31
st st and 29th st.
and adding LIGHTS. That would Completely Change the Ambiance of the Lovely quaint Natural park that I so Love !!
A paved Path thru the Grassy Strip would also greatly INTERFERE with Young Kids and Family s throwing footballs and baseball And little kids playing Soccer ect. In the open field. -----------ALSO a Paved way thru the Grassy area would ENCOURAGE E BIKERS to cut thru that area and
As we all know------many of these E BIKERS speed much to Fast everywhere they go !!…..I ride my regular bike often and Cross that Grassy area all the time…NEVER any problem !

A PAVED path and LIGHTS would completely Change the natural feeling of the Grassy area at SAND DUNE PARK-forever ----and NOT FOR THE BETTER.

As a 40 plus year Resident of 594 31
st st --North Manhattan beach—I
URGE the P&R dept of manhattan beach to NOT PAVE and LIGHT that special Grassy AREA.

Myself and all of my neighbors that I have spoken to Agree -----we Love that Grassy area the way it is currently.

Thank you,

“ Bo” Dean

Hello Mr. Osterkamp,
The specific width has not been determined at this time. The pathway option was added as a design consideration that was shared by other residents in the area to gather community input.

As mentioned below, all input gathered will be discussed at an upcoming Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, and ultimately City Council.

Again, feel free to reach out to me directly if you have any comments or questions.

Thank you,
Mark

>> Hi Mark. Thanks again for your continued efforts as it relates to Sand Dune Park. I heard from a neighbor that the city is contemplating incorporating a paved walkway through the greenbelt of the park, and I wanted to share my thoughts on this with the hopes that this will be reconsidered. >>
>> My family lives on the 500 block of 31st street near the park. We, many of our neighbors both with kids young and older, as well as neighbors from surrounding streets (and cities) use that greenbelt extensively whether for walks, soccer, baseball, lacrosse or just relaxing. The addition of a lighted pathway would significantly reduce the area for such and other activities. Sand Dune Park is the only open park in neighborhood, and cutting down the size of the space any further in order to create a walkway to get from one side of the park to the other just doesn’t seem to make sense.
>>
>> Regarding the lighting, that sounds like a recipe for disaster. If the sports activities were to continue at the park, it’s only a matter of time that someone will hit one or more light posts given the reduced width of the green space. If a path were to happen, would it be wide enough for walkers and bikers in both directions, and what is the proposed width of the pathway including the lights?
>>
>> In closing, we ask that you reconsider paving through one of the few open spaces in the area, save the added expense, and apply the budget savings to a more beneficial cause. The greenbelt is widely used, and I am sure a majority of the residents and non-residents alike would like to continue to use it as is. >>
>> Thanks.

Hello Commission members,
I would like to reiterate Dr. Shahin’s request to not move forward with a cement path across the grass area next to the sand dune park. I live at 570 30th street and have 3 daughters ages 11, 8 and 4. We use that grassy area every weekend to play and run around. I agree it will pose a risk to our young kids to pay attention to bikes, electric bikes, skate boards, etc. The street is full with young kids, under age 6 that use this area to play on a daily basis.

Sincerely,
Paula Schirch, MD
