Proclamation
National Bullying Prevention Awareness Day is observed on the first Monday of October each year; and
the focus is on raising awareness about the prevalence and harmful effects of bullying, especially among children and teenagers; and
bullying is defined as unwanted aggressive behavior or intimidation that may inflict physical, psychological or social harm on a person or group of people; and bullying has become increasingly prevalent and damaging to children and adults, especially through the use of technology, also known as cyberbullying; and targets of bullying are at an increased risk for depression, anxiety, sleep difficulties, lower academic achievement, and dropping out of school, and students are repeatedly bullied often fear such activities as riding the bus, going to school, interacting online, and attending community activities; and
children who bully are at greater risk of engaging in more serious violent behaviors; and children who witness bullying often feel less safe, helpless to stop it, and intimidated; and the City of Manhattan Beach offers a wide variety of youth and adult programs designed to empower future leaders, foster creativity, and promote diversity, equity, inclusion and friendships; and
the City Council states that unwanted aggressive behavior has no place in our community and the commitment to offering all residents an environment that holds promise, provides security and gives residents an opportunity to live, work, play and learn.
