National Blood Donor Month has been declared since 1970 to help ensure an adequate blood supply and to stress the importance of giring the "Gilt of Life" through the donation of blood; and
Whereas National Blood Donor Month is a month-long observance that shows us that donating blood is a simple, sale, lile-saving and a selless gili that millions of Americans can do; and Whereas crerydar blood is needed in hospitals and emergenes arcatment facilities for patients with cancer and other discases, for organ transplant recipients, and to sare lives of accident rictims; and
Wherers. the need for constant replenishment of blood, especiall during the winter months when blood is traditionally in short supple duc to a reduction in donor turnout because of the holidays, busy travel schedules, inclement weather and cold and fu scason, vlich can put blood inventory at a critical lou; and
Whereas approsimatels 62 percent of the U'nited States population is cligible to donate blood but only about 8 percent do, contributing an annual total of'about 13.6 million units to the American Red Cross, that in turn are transfused to approvimate/s 1.5 million patients; and Merers.
the Amencan Red Cross provides 10 percent of the nation's blood suppls and someonc needs blood erer to seconds in the United States. We dedicate this month of January fo all those who resolve to gre the gilt of blood to help their neighbors in need.

and urge all citzens to pat trbute to those among us who donate for others in need. I urge citizens in good hcalth to donate regularly: 1 also unge all civic and service organizations and businesses, il, they have not already done so, to form blood donor groups to pronde blood for others.
