TASK 2.1 DOCUMENT REVIEW
A-2
12100-0001\2186390v9.doc City of MB Form
CWE will research and obtain available record drawings from the City, utility companies, and other agencies for facilities to be depicted in the plan. This includes a detailed review of the 1999 Hydrology Report for the American Martyrs Sump, as well as the City’s 2021 Storm Drain Master Plan and relevant studies relating to the construction of prior storm drain improvements in the vicinity. CWE will research and evaluate stormwater master plans, studies, evaluations, reports, geotechnical assessments, topo graphic surveys, survey ties, City benchmarks, basis for bearings and stationing, existing utilities, City standards, and improvements within and adjacent to the American Martyrs Sump area.

All documents obtained for the Project will be kept in a log, to be shared with the City upon request.

TASK 2.2 FIELD INVESTIGATION
CWE will perform a field investigation of both the American Martyrs Sump and of the drainage area tributary to the sump to identify existing conditions and note topography and potential right -of-way issues in and around the Project work area. CWE will photograph the Project areas, including utilities visible on the surface, and photographs will be used as references during conceptual design. The field investigation findings may also be used to compare with existing record drawings to identify possible utility conflicts.

TASK 2.3 GEOTECHNICAL SERVICES
The proposed scope of geotechnical services consists of field exploration, laboratory testing, and engineering and report delivery. These services are described in the following subsections.

Field Exploration
The field exploration consists of the following:

Number of Borings Planned Boring Depth
(feet)
Proposed Test
3 5, 15, 30 Percolation Testing
1 40 Soil Characterization

CWE will obtain permits as required from Los Angeles County Department of Environmental Health and the City (fees for City encroachment permit are assumed to be waived).

The Consultant will advance soil borings with a truck -mounted drill rig using continuous flight augurs. Four samples will be obtained in the upper 10 feet of each boring and at intervals of 5 feet thereafter. Soil sampling is typically performed using split -barrel sampling procedures. The split -barrel samplers are driven in accordance with the standard penetration test (SPT) procedures. The samples will be placed in appropriate A-3
12100-0001\2186390v9.doc City of MB Form
containers, taken to Terracon’s soil laboratory for testing, and classified by a Geotechnical Engineer. In addition, the Consultant will observe and record groundwater levels (if encountered) during drilling and sampling.

Field boring logs will be prepared as part of standard drilling operations including sampling depths, penetration distances, and other relevant sampling information. Field logs include visual classifications of materials encountered during drilling, as well as the interpretation of subsurface conditions between samples. Final boring logs, prepared from field logs, represent the Geotechnical Engineer’s interpretation, and include modifications based on observations and laboratory tests. Boreholes will be bac kfilled with grout or auger cuttings as required by the permit. The excess auger cuttings will be spread out in open undeveloped areas of the sump.

Percolation Testing
In-situ percolation testing will be conducted to determine the infiltration rate within the American Martyrs Sump. Three (3) borings proposed within the sump area will be utilized for percolation testing as per Los Angeles County requirements. Upon completion of drilling and sampling, a 2-inch-thick layer of gravel will be placed in the bottom of the percolation test borings. A 3-inch diameter polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe will be installed on top of the gravel layer in each boring. Gravel will be used to backfill between the pipes and the boring sidewall. The borings then will be filled with water for the minimum pre - soak period. At the beginning of each test, the pipes will be refilled with water and readings will be taken at a standardized time interval based on County requirements.

Laboratory Testing
The anticipated laboratory testing includes water content, unit dry weight, grain size analysis, and Atterberg limits. Direct shear, consolidation/collapse, and corrosivity analyses for pH, sulfates, chloride ion, and electrical resistivity testing will no t be performed, as paving and building improvements are not anticipated.

Laboratory testing includes examination of soil samples by an engineer. Based on the material’s texture and plasticity, the Consultant will describe and classify soil samples in accordance with the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS).

Engineering and Report Delivery
Results of the field and laboratory programs will be evaluated by a professional engineer.

The engineer will develop a geotechnical site characterization, perform the engineering calculations necessary to evaluate bedding alternatives, and develop appropriate geotechnical engineering design criteria for earth-related phases of the Project.

The geotechnical engineering report will provide the following:
