Proclamation
the month of September 2026 is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and is intended to promote awareness of suicide, educate the public on prevention strategies, eliminate stigma and honor the memory of those we have lost; and every life lost to suicide is one too many, and behind every statistic is a person with a story, a future, and people who cared deeply for them; and suicide and suicide attempts affect the health and well -being of friends, loved ones, co-workers, and the community. Suicide loss survivors experience prolonged grief, shock, anger, guilt, symptoms of depression or anxiety, and even thoughts of suicide themselves; and
suicide is preventable and everyone has a role to play. You may not always know what someone is experiencing, a check -in, listening ear, or a number shared at the right moment, can save a life; and
suicide is the 11th leading cause of death among adults in the United States and the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34; and the City of Manhattan Beach, as a community, chooses to take action against suicide by learning about mental health issues, raising awareness and spreading the word; and every member of our community should understand that throughout life’s struggles we all need the occasional reminder that we are all fighting our own battles, but there’s always help and suicide is never the solution.
Now, Therefore, Be It Resolved that I, Joe Franklin, Mayor of the City of Manhattan Beach, California , on behalf of the City Council and the residents of Manhattan Beach, do hereby proclaim the month of September, 2026 as
National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month
and encourage all residents to take the time to check in with their family, friends, and neighbors on a regular basis and to genuinely communicate their appreciation for their existence.
