Elder and Dependent
Adult Abuse Awareness Month
June 2022
Whereas, since 2006 the month of June has been recognized as World Elder Adult Abuse Awareness Month and June 15th as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations; and Whereas, ageism and social isolation are major causes of elder abuse in the United States and we recognize that it is up to all of us to ensure that proper social structures exist so people can retain community and societal connections, reducing the likelihood of abuse; and Whereas, older adults deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, enabling them to serve as leaders, mentors, volunteers and valued participating members of our community; and Whereas, City of Manteca recognizes that older and dependent adults have the right to be safe in their homes and communities and is committed to helping those individuals live longer and healthier lives; and Now, Therefore, I, Benjamin Cantu, Mayor of the City of Manteca, do hereby proclaim the month of June 2022, as World Elder Abuse and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month, and urge all citizens in our community to recognize and celebrate older adults and their ongoing contributions to the success and vitality of our country.
