Re: Captain Tom Moore Park Naming Request
Dear Kevin,
On June 16, 1999 Captain Tom Moore tragically lost his life in the line of duty at the age of 38.

Tom Moore was hired by the Manteca Fire Department on March 18, 1985. He was a good natured and caring individual who loved people. It did not take Tom very long to move up through the ranks of the department and by July 1, 1991 he had been promoted to Captain. Obtaining the rank of Captain in such a short time is not a common feat and was a reflection of Captain Moore's abilities and passion for the job. He was a California Certified Fire Officer, a Hazardous Materials Specialist, and our department’s primary training instructor. His administrative work with the CAMEO computer program took him all over California, Hawaii, and even Saipan. He was an instructor for the American Rescue Institute, teaching heavy rescue, confined space, and cliff rescue to others around the state.

Tom was even trained as a counselor for our Juvenile Fire-Setter program.

Firefighters are skilled at treating the physical needs of people during a medical emergency or at the scene of an accident. Captain Moore showed us that we could help in other ways as well. Tom developed a Chaplain program to treat the emotional and spiritual needs of family and friends who were affected by a loved one’s illness or injury. He was concerned with helping others beyond the ways we were familiar with as firefighters.

To honor Tom’s contributions to our community and his ultimate sacrifice we humbly request that the City of Manteca consider naming the first neighborhood park at The Trails of Manteca Unit 1 Captain Tom Moore Park. It is our understanding that Raymus Homes and Lennar have agreed to this request.

We appreciate your consideration and look forward to assisting City staff through the process.

Sincerely,
David Marques, Fire Chief
