Diabetes Awareness Month
November 2023
Whereas, The American Diabetes Association estimated over 3 million people in California have been diagnosed with diabetes and an estimated 10.3 million are pre-diabetic; and Whereas, awareness of the warning signs of Type 1 diabetes is crucial to preventing deaths in misdiagnosed children; uncontrolled diabetes puts people at risk for serious complications including cardiovascular disease, blindness, kidney disease and dialysis, and nerve damage and amputation. We can work together to educate and support those living with diabetes; and Whereas, many children and their families affected by diabetes feel overwhelmed by the constant management tasks, daily challenges, and financial burdens that the disease brings; and Whereas, World Diabetes Day is held on November 14, 2023, to help bring further awareness to millions of people with diabetes around the world, this year’s theme is “Access to Diabetes Care” for those that do not have access to diabetes care; and Whereas, local schools and agencies help promote education throughout the year including CAMP 1, a camp specifically catered to kids diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes; and Now, Therefore, I, Gary Singh, Mayor of the City of Manteca, on behalf of City Council, do recognize the month of November as Diabetes Awareness Month, and encourage all citizens to become familiar with diabetes and support the programs and services for those citizens impacted by diabetes.
