January 4, 2024
Presented by:

Sterrie McLeod- Manteca Fire Department

Objective
• The ultimate goal of this workshop tour is to establish a citywide Mission, Vision, and/or Goals statement.
• To get to a citywide vision, each department and the Council need to have a vested interest in this value system. Having input in the process of creating Department/Council Mission, Vision, and/or Goal statement will make a larger statement tangible so that we can live it as employees and as Councilmembers.
• Things to keep in mind during our exercise today:
• Your personal values are for you alone and do not reflect what we expect from others.
• Your work values are things that you can expect from others. • The intent of this exercise is not to right perceived wrongs or account for past behaviors.
• If you determine a need to change, modify or update the values in the future you can do so. This statement should reflect a current vision of the City.

What Are Values?
• Personal Values
• Personal Values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. • They determine your priorities, they are a central part of who you are. • They are the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to- when how you live matches your values, life is usually good! • Workplace Values
• Your workplace values are the guiding principles that are most important to you about the way you work.
• You use these principles to choose between right and wrong ways of working, they guide important decisions and career choices.
• Organizational Values
• Core beliefs held by an organization.
• They act as guiding principles that provide an organization with purpose and direction and set the tone for its interaction with customers, employees, and other stakeholders ATTACHMENT 1
Identifying Core City Values
Why do we care about personal and workplace values if we’re here to discuss/create a citywide mission, vision, values statement?  Before you can understand/identify your organization’s values, you have to understand your own values.
 Knowing what values are most important to you can help you better understand and identify others’ values.  Once you understand what is important to you and your peers, it becomes clear what should be important to the organization.
 This understanding helps the mission, vision, values, come to life! ATTACHMENT 1
Setting the Stage: Personal Values- Step 1
Step 1: The following questions will help get you thinking about your personal values. We will not be sharing these answers. Please write down one or two word answers to the following questions:

1. What makes you excited to serve the City of Manteca?

2. What characteristics do you value most in your fellow Councilmembers and staff?

3. What do you think employees value most about the City Council and staff?

4. What do you think the local Mantecan values in the City Council and staff? ATTACHMENT 1

Setting the Stage: Personal Values- Step 3
Step 3: Group all of the values/words from the previous list that seem similar to you. Group them in a way that makes sense to you, there is no right way. Create a maximum of five groups of similar words. If you have more than five groupings, drop those least important to you. The examples below are values that have common meaning to the person who made them.

After you have your five groupings, narrow that down to one word that summarizes the group of words.

Based on the grouping of words above, you could end up with the following five words:

Flexibility, Compassion, Thoughtfulness, Balance, Happiness These become your five core words to take into the next step.

Next Steps: Group Values- Step 4
Step 4: Break into groups. As a group, share your individual five words with everyone in the group. From each individual set of five words, come up with five words that best represents the five words for the entire group. There are no right or wrong answers. You are defining the answer that is right for you.

See the example below- the label chosen for each grouping is bolded.

Final Stage: Organizational Values- Step 5
Step 5: Come back together as one large group. Each group will share their values and why they chose them as a group. As one larger group, create a new list of five words and use them to craft your Mission, Vision, Value Statement.  From your individual values, you came up with your shared values. From your shared values, you derived a mission statement that represents you as a person, a Councilmember, and a citizen of the City of Manteca.
Congratulations!
