AGENDA ITEM
TITLE: Discuss Increase in Local Sales Tax
PROPOSED BY: Council Member Bell
MEETING DATE: March 12, 2024

RECOMMENDATION
None

BACKGROUND
This item is on the agenda at the request of Council Member Bell.

Mr. Bell wishes to discuss the possibility of placing a local sales tax increase on the November, 2024 ballot.

Attached hereto is a draft ordinance and resolution prepared by the City Attorney in 2012 when this issue was last discussed. The draft ordinance, if adopted by Maricopa voters, would raise the sales tax for transactions occurring within the city by one cent. There are several steps necessary to place this matter on the ballot.

Because the resolution references materials calling the November city election which will be adopted by Council later this year, any action other than directing staff at this time would be premature. This item is presented simply for Council review and comment, if any.

County Elections Office advises that the deadline to submit a measure is 88 days before the election. For the November election, that date is August 9, 2024. The county's measure calendar is not yet available. County Elections will send out more information regarding the election in May.
