Item #04
Date: January 17, 2023
To: Mayor and City Council
From: Christian S. Sachs, Chief of Police
Jim Schaad, City Manager
Subject: California Office of Traffic Safety Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Grant 2023/2024 Recommendation:
Pass a Motion to 1) authorize the Police Chief, or designee, to submit for California Office of Traffic Safety Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Grant and 2) approval to accept the grant in the event the Police Department is awarded funding.
Rationale for Recommendation:
Submitting for and accepting this grant funding would allow the Police Department to increase traffic enforcement in areas where primary traffic collision factors are more prevalent. This grant would also increase enforcement driving under the influence enforcement and increase bicycle/pedestrian safety.
Background:
The City of Marysville Police Department (MPD) has received this grant from 2005 to 2015 and again 2019 to 2022, which supported traffic enforcement efforts city wide. This grant has also afforded the Department to purchase a DUI command trailer, portable generators with light stands, traffic cones, breathalyzer machines, overtime related costs, and traffic safety vests.
Discussion & Analysis:
The California Office of Traffic Safety Selective Enforcement Program grant would be a one-year grant if awarded. This grant cycle will be October 1, 2023, through September 30, 2024. This funding would be used to increase traffic enforcement and purchase traffic enforcement, radar trailer, and related equipment to support the needs of the grant.
Fiscal Impact:
There is no fiscal impact to the City general fund. Staff would submit the 23/24 grant for $85,539.10 to the California Office of Traffic Safety. If awarded, staff would execute the grant.
