Item #04
Date: June 6, 2023
To: Mayor and City Council
From: Jennifer Styczynski, Finance Director
Jim Schaad, City Manager
Subject: Community Sponsorship Program Application Review Recommendation:

Pass a Motion to 1) award one $1,500 community sponsorship to the Marysville Chinese Community non-profit organization per the approved Community Sponsorship Policy, and 2) reallocate the balance of funding ($3,500) to enhance the music venue at the Peach Festival.

Background:

At the October 20, 2020 Council Meeting, Council adopted the Community Sponsorship Policy for NonGovernmental Organizations (NGO’s). As part of the program adoption, applications submitted by March 31st are to be submitted by staff to the City Council for review and discussion as a part of the annual budget process.

Discussion & Analysis:

The City is in receipt of six applications with a funding request of the maximum amount allowable ($1,500 per qualified application). In review of the six applications, staff has made the determination that all were submitted by the Marysville Chinese Community non-profit organization for activities under the umbrella of the Bok Kai weekend in March of 2024 and are therefore one event. No other organizations submitted applications. Staff is recommending funding the maximum $1,500 to assist with the Bok Kai fireworks display to take place on March 9, 2024. With a maximum of $5,000 proposed to be awarded for the Fiscal Year 2023-2024, staff recommend the remaining $3,500 be reallocated to the Peach Festival budget for music enhancements similar to those provided at last year’s Peach Festival.

Applications have an annual due date of March 31 to be considered for award and then if awarded, the funding would be disbursed after the turn of the next fiscal year (July 1) within a reasonable amount of time after the budget for that fiscal year is adopted by City Council.

Alignment with City Council Goal(s):

This Agenda Item helps support Goal #2: Expand Economic Development; as this program puts dollars in direct contact with local businesses through an application process.

Item #04
Fiscal Analysis:

For the Fiscal Year 2023-2024, $1,500 is proposed to be approved in the budget for Community Sponsorships with the remaining $3,500 in the Peach Festival expense budget.
