RECOMMENDED ACTION
1. Adopt a resolution supporting actions to further strengthen local democracy, authority, and control as related to local zoning and housing issues in alignment with the City of Menifee’s Legislative Platform.
DISCUSSION
On February 7, 2024, Councilmember Sobek presented a resolution supporting actions to further strengthen local control related to zoning and housing issues for review and consideration at a future City Council meeting. The proposed resolution was drafted by the California Cities for Local Control organization founded in July 2020 by Torrance City Councilmember Mike Griffiths as way for local leaders to collectively advocate for cities and their ability to have more input than the State of California or developers in what is built in their cities ( www.localcontrolca.com). Similar resolutions have been adopted by cities throughout the state, including the cities of Canyon Lake and Murrieta, to strengthen efforts to preserve local control with respect to local land use decisions. Such efforts align with the City of Menifee’s adopted legislative platform which stipulates that the City will oppose any measures that reduce, eliminate, or preempt local control or authority.
