DISCUSSION
California Clean Air Day is a statewide initiative created and spearheaded by the Coalition for Clean Air (CCA) Organization. CCA was founded in 1971 and focuses on advocating clean air solutions across the state of California. Typically held annually on the first Wednesday in October, organizations and community groups participate in California Clean Air Day to promote emission- reducing habit changes and educate the public about air quality topics. Each year approximately 330 organizations, 22 transit agencies, and 16,500 individuals participate by submitting pledges and/or hosting events on Clean Air Day. Local government agencies have the unique ability to directly engage their community members and inspire them to take action. This process can begin with a public announcement, such as a Council proclamation, and is encouraged via social media promotion and activities/events that promote behavioral changes that contribute to the overall mission of achieving cleaner air. Beyond just the singular day, residents are encouraged to continue their actions long-term, such as carpooling, shopping local, planting trees, and practicing energy conservation.
Since 2019, the City Menifee has committed to participating in this statewide effort through a City Council proclamation and a series of community events designed to be fun and engaging.

Additionally, these activities help to further community knowledge of state emission reduction legislation Senate Bill (SB) 1383. This year, Menifee, in addition to a Council proclamation, will host a community garden event aimed at teaching residents about the benefits of a cleaner, greener, more sustainable future. Participants can explore local gardening resources, enjoy a hands-on gardening demonstration, and take home their own scoop of mulch. Every attendee will receive a free seed pack, and early registrants will also receive a complimentary gardening kit, while supplies last.
To recognize Menifee’s commitment to Clean Air Day, CCA has awarded a $300 microgrant through its annual competitive program. The funding will support event activities, including the purchase of giveaways and refreshments for participants.
