I am looking to be more involved with improving our community. I love the arts and paint at home myself. I have a positive and creative outlook in life.

I currently work for Mercy Therapy Service on the Outpatient department and has been working here for about 15 years now. Before that I worked as a Spanish Interpreter for Health House. I have also been part of the Winton Rotatory Club in the past. I did also participate in the Merced/ Somoto Nicaragua sister cities in 1993 and then again about 6 years ago.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? To help improve our community by participating as a citizen on finding answers as a group. The input of the members help to shape the policies under which the city operates. Willingness to function as a team member. Maintaining firm conviction on what I believe in and for the best interest of all. Also recognizing conflict of interests and willing to resolve issues
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I have been on the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission now for four years. I would be delighted to continue be part of this Commission in carrying out its vision and mission.

I have always been interested in the cultural life of cities and ways communities have used arts and culture to redefine themselves in these changing times. Having been a first-generation university student with a low-income background, I am both familiar with the various challenges that many in the Central Valley face and the many unique possibilities that can come with education and the arts. I therefore attempt to maintain a straightforward and practical perspective on the impact of arts and culture, neither dismissing them outright nor overestimating their impacts.

I have taught history and culture at UC Merced for more than three years. Though UC Merced's student population comprises many from various parts of California and beyond, the demographics are not too dissimilar to that of Merced itself. I also have experience in the arts and arts promotion as part of a guest curatorial team at the UCLA Fowler Museum.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? My understanding of this advisory commission as presented on the City of Merced's primary web page is that members are to serve in an advisory capacity, providing recommendations on arts and culture projects and events for the city of Merced. Members are to develop an understanding of the particular arts and culture interests relevant to Merced community members, work with the local arts council, provide support to groups involved in arts projects, and to recommend standards.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I have not served on any commission in the past, but what I can contribute is my prior research experience in urban arts initiatives and familiarity of trends in culture-led urban revivals (including their potential benefits and pitfalls) on both sides of the Pacific.
Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
Although much of my prior research experience is in Asia, the trends in arts and culture initiatives on both sides of the Pacific parallel one another. My wife and I have a lifelong interest in the arts. We both are retired educators, she at the elementary level and me at the university level. We lived in a university environment for over thirty years and were involved in the cultural and art activities of each university where I was employed. We lived in a small university town before moving to Merced for 30 years before our retirements and relocating to Merced to be closer to family. We have lived in Merced for three years now and found it to be a city on the rise and we would like to be a part of that. Merced has been good for us and to us and we would like to give something back and wait better way that working to enhance it’s cultural environment.

I have spent the last fourteen years of my life, since I moved to Merced, dedicated to the arts in this community. I have seen the arts scene continue to grow all around the county and have been so proud I played a little part in making that happen.

I am currently self-employed. I recently started an arts collective called the Phoenix Creative Collective.
We are dedicated to continuing to work with artists and raising awareness of arts organizations all across the Central Valley. Prior to that I was the Artistic Director for Playhouse Merced for ten years, I currently serve on the board of Merced Theater, and I am a frequent collaborator with the executive director, Colton Dennis, at the Arts Center.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? I understand that its purpose is to advise the City Council on projects involving public art, art events and activities.

I think this is an amazing step for Merced County. The Arts are an incredible economic driver of its community and also one of the top three things outside companies look for when moving their companies into a new area.

As a resident of Merced County for over 10 years, I've seen amazing developments for the City of Merced that have enhanced the quality of life of its citizens.
I believe that the next 10 years offers even more
optimism for the city's residents as we help build out a mid-21st century vision of economic and artistic growth.
As someone with years of experience in the area, I am committed to helping build out a vision of Merced that assists with the development of common community interests around art, music, cultural identity, and general hobbies.
Pandemic isolation, for many people, has meant a disconnect from common community events that have traditionally assisted in socializing and uniting the community in the past.
I am motivated to help rebuild the spirit of Merced’s community bond by listening and helping find solutions to current community needs.
Currently, I work as the Natural Sciences Career Specialist with the University of California Merced’s Office of Leadership, Service, and Career.

I have always been drawn to the arts ever since I was a little person. I have been a cosmetologist for 35+ years. This livelihood has afforded me the freedom to explore many creative endeavor. As well as being a hair sculptor and colorist,
I have expressed my joy in dance, poetics and
songwriting jewelry design and
visual arts,
"with joy...life is art". I am a self published author of a very special and timely book called "Simply Rich - A Cosmic Romance" This book is unique in that it begins at both ends and resolves in the middle.
I am applying for this position for the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission because I love the Arts and I love we the people! It would be an honor to serve the city of Merced in this way. I have a real passion for growing our community creatively!

I am currently in a transition of occupation. I have been doing hair for a good chunk of time and I am needing to establish by other services as livelihood. I am in the process of establishing an arts program for young people and people of all ages to bring all facets of the human experience into a new form of integrative theater. This is something that I have been envisioning for quite some time and I have a creative template to offer Community Theater as a medium of bringing people together to bring our true stories to life for fun and healing.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? I have a basic understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Arts and Culture Commission for Merced as listed.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I do not have any previous experience with this Arts and Culture Commission. I have served on the board of my church for several terms and have a general understanding of serving on a board. It is wonderful to exchange perspective and ideas and work for creative outcomes! Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
We are living in a most challenging and artful times in all of history. I would be happy to contribute to the conversation and opportunities of this commission for the thriving arts within our community...and the world at large.

I have lived in the city of Merced since I was 19 currently 24 years old I own a home in Merced and I pay taxes I advocate, work full time and I am a mother of one child.
Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.
I am currently sitting on the bicycle committee as a ex-officio on the third district.and on the redistricting advisory committee and want to apply for the at large position on the bicycle and pedestrian committee.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? I have to respect and comply with the brown Act respect my fellow commissioners and advocate for the city I live in.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I am currently attending a cohort on behalf of Building Healthy Communities called boards and commission leadership institute, yes I have been on a national advisory board for foster youth.
Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
I am a former foster youth and have loads of experience advocating and creating change in the legislative branch of government.

Prior to moving to the City of Merced, I worked the museum field for many years and in many disciplines including art, history and science.
I have a Bachelors and Masters degree in art with an emphasis in art history and have taught art appreciation courses at the community college level and have also taught children's art and historic conservation classes.
In the course of my museum career began as a registrar, I worked my way up to curator and then manager of exhibitions and education and have been employed at the following institutions: Fresno Art Museum, Fresno Metropolitan Museum, Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara, San Diego Historical Society, Society of California Pioneers in San Francisco and the Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC Berkeley.
The scope of my work has included large scale exhibition management, organizing education programs from lecture series to curriculum writing for K-12 programs. I have been involved with outdoor sculpture restoration projects and civic programs to make art and history accessible for disadvantaged audiences.
When I came to Merced from the Bay Area over ten years ago, I had a young family and my time was taken up with my work and family responsibilities. Like many of us who grew up in the Valley, I came back to raise my daughter in an area where I could be close to my family and enjoy a lower cost of living.
My daughter is now older and my scope of work has changed a bit allowing me to focus back on my passion for art and history.
With that in mind, I am applying for the
commission as an ex-offico member in the hope that I can use my past expertise to better art and cultural programming in the City of Merced.
Our city has such potential to fill special niche that is not enjoyed by many smaller California towns.
I look at arts programming in other towns of our size and know we can put ourselves on the map while enriching the lives of our citizens through proper organization, determination and commitment.
If done correctly, the work of this commission should elevate the optics of our city, boost civic pride and make art exciting and accessible to all demographics.

For the last 14 years I have been employed by the University of California. Initially I was hired at UC Berkeley and for the last decade I have been at UC Merced in the Office of the Chancellor.
I have
volunteered for the United Way, Merced City School District and for food insecurity issues on the UC Merced campus as well as sit on the Merced Theater Board.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? After reading the scope of work on the City of Merced website as well as similar material from other cities, I understand that the role of the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission is to advise the City Council on ways to the promote the arts in the City of Merced through developing and encouraging programs for the cultural enrichment of the city.
