I recently moved back to my hometown of Merced to be closer to aging parents and to raise my kids in a family-friendly community with a small town feel. When deciding where in California to move after living in Amsterdam where we were car-free for 8 years, it was the lower traffic lifestyle (relative to much of CA) and the family friendly pace that put Merced over the top for us. As Merced grows, I believe active transportation will be a key factor in maintaining a healthy, well functioning urban village. I would like to support further development of safe, active transportation paths and corridors, and to put my energy towards learning from and supporting the efforts of the commission.

While not currently employed, my work experience has run the gamut from architecture to entrepreneurship to product management with a recent focus on sustainability. My volunteer experience has been equally varied from teaching literacy to hospice support to neighborhood cleanup.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? The commission was created to fully support the City Council as needed in the development, improvement, and growth of safe, healthy forms of active transportation in Merced. I understand the key functions to be as follows:
-- review and advise city council on improvements, changes, and development of active transportation including capital improvement projects, policies, programs, municipal code, and city plans when relevant. -- promote the value of active transportation for its benefits to air quality, health, and community. This includes the development and implementation of awareness and education materials/programs for the community.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? With a background in architecture and some experience at a real estate development firm, I've had some experience with city commissions such as architectural review boards and planning departments. I’ve long had an interest in the built environment and how it impacts mobility, health, and community. Having lived in a variety of cities with different approaches to active transport and having observed much change and development over time in these cities, I have first-hand experience with active transport in a variety of settings.

Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
While active transport doesn’t make the list of most pressing community needs unlike affordable housing or jobs, I believe it is an increasingly important part of a systems approach to supporting the health and security of our community against the growing threat of climate change. I am a resident of Merced, CA for two and a half years now, and I am interested in learning more and participating in the multi-modal improvements made in the City. I also have a history of bicycle and pedestrian planning for Tulare County.
Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.
Merced County Association of Governments. I participate when I can in community events including earth day, clean up days, events and festivals, and I enjoy riding my bicycle and walking through neighborhoods for exercise and fun.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? Provide input to staff and City Council for priority improvements to bicycle and pedestrian projects in the City of Merced.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? Yes. I used to staff the Tulare County Bicycle Advisory Committee, and sat in on the City of Visalia Recreation and Waterways and Trails Committee as an ex oficio member.

I commute by bike every day and have a strong interest in advising the City of Merced on bikefriendly transportation measures. As I do not own a car I realy on public transportation and would like to provide feedback and a stakeholder view to assist the City council with making important decisions. I do know I am not a registered voter, but would like to be appointed as an ex-officio member (as far as I understand possible for non-voters).

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? When asked, review city transportation planning documents and give feedback from a citizens point of view. GIve advice on bicycle and other active transportation road user related matters. Pose as a point of contact for Merced citizens with questions and concerns related bike and pedestrian road users.

I am not a registered voter, because I am inelegible to vote. Nonetheless I consider myself a member of the community and therefore, would like to quote from the website: 'The Commission consists of seven registered City of Merced voting members, and four ex-officio members appointed at the City Council's discretion. Ex-officio members are non-voting members who may be non-city residents who live within the City's sphere of influence, or persons who otherwise demonstrate a strong concern for bicycle-related issues within the City.'
