I am reapplying for the Recreation And Parks Commission because I want to continue to offer my skills to the commission and City of Merced.
I have over 20 years providing direct service, cultural humility programs, mentorship, and organizational development. I would like to continue on the commission to provide staff and the new director with support.
Furthermore, I currently work at UC Merced as the
director of the Campus Advocacy, Resources and Education, and I am involved in various campus affinity groups.

I have worked at UC Merced since 2016.
I am the co-chair and co-founder of two affinity groups, Language Accessibility Committee and Staff and Faculty of Color Association.
I am also a volunteer for
Tri-City Youth Football and Cheer.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? The commission provides oversight of the budget, services and staff employed by the City of Merced Recreation and Parks Department. I feel that the commission's role is to provide insight to staff of community needs and to collaborate with staff to negotiate an understanding of the mission.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I was on the City of Santa Barbara Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Committee for over 9 years and provided oversight to a budget between 1.5 and 2.5 million dollars.

I am excited to continue to serve the City of Merced.

I have been a resident in the City of Merced my whole life. I have chosen to raise my children in this wonderful community, and consider it both a City with a blank slate, and a rich history that cannot be looked over. In the past I have been apart of a few of Merced's Recreation and Parks projects. I feel that in this new role I could be more beneficial.

My current employer is VVHCE.
In the past I have been a member of the Merced Breakfast Lions (Planning on rejoining). I have been a part of Merced's Youth 2 Youth program. I was an assistant coach for my son's soccer team. In the past I have been a board member for a church that I had attended. I have also helped with various youth oriented functions, and activities for the church and surrounding community.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? I do know that strict attendance is a must while being a Board Member. Feedback is needed to help move a project forward, while keeping in mind the best interests of Merced residents.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I will be honest, and say no. However I have been a part of previous projects where my input was asked for as a resident of Merced.
Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
I feel this would be a great opportunity for me, especially with the upcoming growth of Merced. I also want my children to understand the importance of being a responsible citizen.

Commonly knows as Worknet. I served in all capacities for the Merced Youth Soccer Association for almost twenty years.

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? Besides the role of an advisory to the city council on recreation and parks and the budget recommending aspect, I am specially interested in the assisting in planning of recreation programs for the citizens of Merced.
All roles I'm willing to assist in.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? Planning recreation youth programs and budgeting for them has been my strength during my volunteering with youth sports.

I understand that there are monthly meetings and am able to attend them all.

extreme illness and sporadic family vacations, which I can do my best to not be during the fourth Monday of each month.

I have lived in Merced my entire adult life with the exception of my college years when I lived in Fresno and Turlock.
I am now married to my wife Jessica and we have a 2 year old boy named Declan.
We enjoy
going out on weekends to the farmers market, breakfast downtown, walks around our neighborhood trails and parks, and going to the Merced Zoo.
We are season pass holders for the Merced Zoological Society.
My son loves the monkeys and the goats in the petting zoo. :) As a parent to a young son it is important to
my wife and I that we have clean, safe, and easily accessible play areas, parks, green spaces, trails, and other activities for our families and children to enjoy.

I moved to Merced to be close to Yosemite national park, and was pretty surprised to learn about the lack of any recreational activities to do outdoors in/around Merced. I'm interested in getting involved in this committee because I want to learn more about how city governance works, and how Merced could attract more young people like myself who want to take advantage of our proximity to recreation that Merced has to offer.

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? As I understand, this role sits on an advisory board for the city council that can make recommendations referring to budgeting of local parks/events that will best benefit the people in Merced.

I worked in outdoor recreation as a rock climbing guide during my summers in college, and some weekends while taking classes. Not especially relevant, but I also have a passion for being outside in the mountains, and enjoy skiing, mountain biking, rock climbing, and hiking.

I enjoy sharing a passion of the outdoors with others, and would like to help find ways to do that in Merced.

The Planning Commission is responsible for conditionally approving or disapproving subdivision plans in order to ensure the city of Merced's orderly and sensible development. In addition, it must provide adequate housing, transportation, distribution, comfort, convenience, safety, and health and welfare services to its citizens. I am also interested in the Recreation and Parks Commission because working with them involves working to improve the quality of life for everyone through promoting environmental conservation, social equity, and health and wellbeing. Everyone desires to go to work every day at a job they enjoy, and I enjoy helping as well as planning.

I am currently unemployed due to the pandemic as well as completing my degree as a Political Science major at UC Merced. My relevant work experience would be my involvement with government programs since middle school to now (college). I have assisted in hosting events like CABcinema, Treats and Beats and more. Besides school activities, I have worked with my club (UC Merced Cheer) in volunteering with children, lake clean ups as well as parades. My communication and collaboration skills have strengthened within these years because of those experiences.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? My understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the Planning Commission include the primary function to plan, as the name implies. These group of citizens serve in local government as an advisory group to the municipal governing body on planning, land use regulation, and community development issues and policies. As for the Recreation and Parks Commission , I understanding of their roles are to manage, direct, supervise, and organize the community's many recreation activities and special events, as well as park and related facility maintenance.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I have plenty of experience in organizing events, as I've mentioned my involvement with the Campus Activities Board at UC Merced, it included contacting vendors, making excel sheets, frequent meetings, creating itineraries, and more. As for the Planning Commission, I may not have much experience with zoning laws but I am open to learning.

I choose to major in Political Science because of the importance government plays in a city. I want to be a part of the group that plays the role in making the City of Merced a place that never stops improving, put it on the map! While yes it is on the map, I believe it can become just as popular as cities like LA. With UC Merced renovating as well as places off campus, I want to have an input and be an advocate for others.

In regards to the recreation and parks commission, I want to help to expand Merced's parks and recreation department so that my children can always enjoy the parks and enjoy the activity's I enjoyed growing up here. In regards to the Personnel board I have begun an interest in local politics and I feel that commission and boards would be a good starting point to start to see the administration of city personnel Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.
I do not currently have an employer I am a full time student. I have spent time volunteering at the food bank.
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? In regards to the recreation and parks commission my understanding is that they advise city council on matters relating to parks and recreation and also help with the planning of recreation activities for the city of Merced. In regards to the personnel board they give their advice to city council on the possible changing of civil service rules and regulations. They also hear the appeals of anyone in the civil service field that has had a suspension demotion or dismissal. For the redistricting committee I am under the belief that the committee is responsible for drawing up new district lines.
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? The ability to organize and make sense of scattered ideas into a cohesive singular idea. And a desire to truly do what's best for Merced as a whole.

If appointed to any of these positions I will do my best to serve the best interest of Merced and the people who live here.
