TODAY'S DATE: 12/30/2022
-
REASON FOR REQUEST FOR COMMEMORATIVE FLAG:
Please fly the Italian Flag for the month of October in honor of the largest mass lynching in American history. On March 14, 1891, when 11 Italian-Americans were murdered in New Orleans by a mob. October is also significant as it holds the Federal holiday, Christopher Columbus Day. Italian-Americans were often thought of as second class citizens and have proven their doubters wrong by being hard working, patriotic citizens. Some notable Italian- Americans include: Frank Sinatra Joe DiMaggio, Enrico Fermi, Mario Puzo, Lido lacocca, and Antonin Scalia.
The Italo-American Lodge founded in 1933 with 1,000 members in its history, has a long standing tradition of providing a place for locals to gather and celebrate their Italian heritage. From Piemonte and Veneto to Calabria and Sicily, the Italo-American Lodge located near historic Spaghetti Acres, has stood the test of time through connection to its family friendly roots. Many members of the Italo-American Lodge have made big impacts locally including Mayor Matt Serratto, Elmer Lorenzi, Tim Razzari, the late Joe Marchini, Mike Salvadori and Richard Bernasconi.
Along with countless others, who through their life's work, have positively impacted Merced County and beyond. The Italo-American Lodge gives back to this community through fundraisers that support local scholarships.
