Interests & Experiences
Tell us about yourself, and why you are applying for this particular Board or Commission:

As a long-time bicycling commuter and clean-air enthusiast I am dedicated to increasing awareness of cycling for transportation and to the improvement of bicycling conditions in Merced. To help achieve the goal of greatly increasing the use of bicycles instead of automobiles I have been an active member of the Merced Bicycle Coalition for 15 years and was formerly a Commissioner of the Merced Bicycle Advisory Commission (BAC). I believe my experience with the BAC in its formative years as well as my participation in numerous citizens advisory committees would be an asset to the Commission.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

Current Employer: California Teachers Association - Merced/Mariposa Teachers UniServ Council, 3351 M Street #105, Merced, 95348; Executive Secretary, September 2015 to present.

Volunteer Experience:

Merced Bicycle Coalition, 731 E. Yosemite Ave. Suite B #427, Merced, 95340; member since 2008. • Founding chairperson, current treasurer • Formed partnerships with local government and nonprofits to organize city-wide bike to work campaigns • Developed and presented educational workshops and youth bicycling courses • Conducted community events to encourage bicycle commuting, including the Mayor's Bike Ride • Implemented four Safe Routes to School grants in Winton for the Merced County Departments of Public Health and Public Works, 2013-2023 • Organized and conducted bikeability assessments to pinpoint infrastructure needs and safety concerns • Advocated for safe, convenient, and continuous bikeways in Merced City and County to promote and support bicycling for transportation • Reviewed and evaluated infrastructure projects related to bicycle transportation • Composed active transportation policy recommendations for General Plan, Climate Action Plan, and Bicycle Transportation Plan • Promoted the implementation of Complete Streets policies and programs What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? The role of the Bicycle Advisory Commission is to advise City Council on matters relevant to bicycling and active transportation in the City of Merced. Commissioners are responsible for reviewing projects, policies, plans, and standards, providing input and making recommendations based on their experience and knowledge of bicycling and active transportation, bringing the concerns of the public to the attention of City staff and Council, and additional duties as assigned.

Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? From the inception of the BAC in 2009 through the completion of a third term in 2023 I have been a fully engaged member and learned quite a lot about the function and relationship of the commission in the context of the related City departments. In the two years off the Commission between my second and third terms I attended nearly all BPAC meetings.
