Interests & Experiences
Tell us about yourself, and why you are applying for this particular Board or Commission:

I'm very interested in joining the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission because I have the knowledge and understanding of what needs to be done regarding the safety of bicycles and pedestrians.

I have ridden my bike over Merced County and have also thought about the importance of safety and how we can improve the quality of care for others who either have no transportation or walk around town. I believe I can help and advise others about how we can make transportation easier and safer for others.

I'm currently a Board Member of the Regional Airport Authority, but I believe we can never do too much; there's always something we can do to improve ourselves and learn along the way. Thank you, and hopefully you will give me another opportunity to become part of the City of Merced.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

Currently, a college student actively looking for work.

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? My understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Commission is to improve the quality of life for citizens of the City of Merced or County to provide matters of improving conditions for bicyclist pedestrians activity and other modes of transportation within the City.

Advising City Council on the design
of capital improvement projects,
within changes and updates to Active Transportation and Safe-Routes to School Plan.

Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I know what should be done for the safety of Bicyclists and Pedestrians in need of transportation, whether they are bicyclists or someone else who walks throughout the city of Merved in the county of Merved to get where they need to go, such as work, school, etc. As far as experience goes, I don't have any regarding this commission, but I'm willing to learn and gain more experience for future reference.

This opportunity would help with my future references regarding my character and gaining experience with improving my city. I'm already part of a board, which is the Regional Airport Authority, but you never do too much; you can always learn something new, improve yourself, and help others along the way. If you want something, I would say go for it. In that case, I'm going for it. Thank you, and hopefully, you considered me for this Commission.

Transportation Plans were being updated.

I am also familiar with Caltrans' Active Transportation Program and other grant funding opportunities. In 2019, I was instrumental in helping the City of Gustine secure $147,000 of grant funding for an Active Transportation Plan.

I believe my past and current involvement in
activities that advance active transportation in the region could be a resource for the BPAC.

MCAG is
committed to the goal of helping establish a safe and and functional regional network of pedestrian and bicycle facilities to better connect where people live and where they need to go in Merced County. So, having a representative from MCAG serve on the BPAC would aid MCAG in understanding first-hand the barriers to human-powered travel experienced by the citizens of Merced and would make it easier for the agency to offer effective solutions.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

Merced County Association of Governments - Senior Planner What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? I understand the roles and responsibilities as outlined here: The Bicycle Advisory Commission (BAC) serves as an advisory body to the City Council on matters relating to improving conditions for bicyclists, promoting bicycling as a means of transportation with the associated benefits of improved air quality, and improving safety conditions for bicyclists. The BAC has the responsibility of reviewing and advising the City Council on: • The design of capital improvement projects. • Changes and updates to the Bicycle Master Plan, General Plan, and Municipal Code as they relate to bicycling. • Promoting bicycling as a viable form of transportation and assist in the development and dissemination of bicycle awareness and education materials to the community. • Any other duties as City Council may assign.

I understand that if
appointed as an Ex-Officio member, I would not have voting privileges.

Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? No, I have never served on the BPAC.

Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
Even though I live in Madera, I grew up in Merced. I attended school from kindergarten through community college in Merced.

My dad and other family members still reside here and I spend a lot of time working and playing in Merced.

Investing time to further enrich this beautiful city is time well spent.

Interests & Experiences
Tell us about yourself, and why you are applying for this particular Board or Commission:

I have a BSEET, and have a background in audiovisual installation and construction. I just purchased a house in Merced, and would love to help fix some of the issues I see with the growing city, and hopefully make things better. I am from the Bay Area, but have lived in several cities in the SF Bay Area and surrounding cities, and have traveled extensively all over the SF Bay Are, and Northern California for work, including the Central Valley. I would like to help Merced improve their parks, hopefully get some moe stop signs in residential areas, and speed bumps to help ensure the safety of pedestrians. As far as parks goes, I would love to improve teh quality of the parks by adding much more trees, places to have a small picnic, and other quality of life improvements. One of my favorite parks in the Bay Area is in Los Gatos, Jack Fischer Park. It has lots of trees for shade, a walking path, and a water feature for kids to play in during the summer, along with other amenities.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

I work for BrightSign , as a technical resource for support of their Digital signage products and services. I work from home. During the weekend and week, I am busy as a Jehovah's Witness teaching people about the Bible. We are currently remodeling the Kingdom Hall at 2135 Olive Ave.

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? The commission votes on
topics that affect the community and hear community concerns , and then take action on those concerns
Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? I have a background in construction, responding to RFPs and RFIs, evaluating bids, and creating bids.

I
know how to read a plan, create documentation including CAD that can be used to construct the technology in a space, and also consult for any questions during construction.

Interests & Experiences
Tell us about yourself, and why you are applying for this particular Board or Commission:

I've been an active cyclist since age 5, averaging 4-6 thousand miles/year on bicycles for the last 35 years.

Merced has a good head start in providing safe and enjoyable bike paths and routes, but more than a few of the local bike paths need both regular maintenance and significant repairs.

The health and
environmental benefits of getting people out on bikes are clear, making it as easy and desirable for them to do is my goal.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

I'm a retired family physician that commuted to work by bicycle (18 miles roundtrip) for 25 years in Central Oregon, regardless of the weather.

When I retired, I became active in the U.S. Forestry volunteer corps, working for three years with groups of men and women to clear trails of fallen trees in wilderness areas.

Chainsaws are not allowed in wilderness areas, so we worked with cross-cut saws.

I've also volunteered
in a prison library (Deer Ridge Correctional Facility, Madras, Oregon), developing a prisoner's book club that met every two weeks for three years, stopping when COVID prevented volunteers from working in prisons.

I also served as a volunteer physician for eight years working with End of Life Choices, Oregon.

Lastly I volunteered with Central Oregon Trail Association, a group dedicated to developing and maintaining mountain bike trails in Central Oregon.

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission? I am assuming that the board has an advisory role regarding bicycle routes and paths in Merced County.

I'm hoping that the role is not a "window-dressing" role demanded by grants.

Said differently, if I put
significant effort into improving bicycling in Merced, I expect that the work will be seriously considered in the planning and implementation of bicycle safety and access issues going forward.

Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission? No.

Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
Friends that have visited me in Merced, and gone riding with me, are surprised by the extent of bicycling options in Merced.

I'd love to see how the trails that already exist can be maintained/improved in a prioritized way that is respectful of the other needs that the Merced City Council has, but at the same time a way that does not undervalue what our growing city needs in order to promote the mental and physical health of its citizens.
