Significant traffic issue when backing apparatus into station. Traffic light measures may be needed.
Describe Concerns At This Location:
Fire station 54 is on E. 21st St and when returning to the station there has been an increase in near-misses with both vehicles and pedestrians not stopping to allow for fire apparatus to back in.
Backers are assigned to assist the driver when backing into the station but the concern is that members may be at an increased risk by exiting the vehicle to allow for backing. The risk stems from members exiting the apparatus and other vehicle drive around and are not able to see the members.
Limited street parking creates some of the hazard. Red paint for the south curb is a possible help. May need to consider a lighting solution to stop traffic.
