Interests & Experiences
Tell us about yourself, and why you are applying for this particular Board or Commission:

I grew up in Merced and always knew it was home, but in the last 6-8 months have really taken an interest in doing my part to make our home, the best place it can be. So far, that has included following the city council and its meetings and decisions, and being a board member for a local real estate and affiliate organization. I work in the real estate industry and closely follow, and am in the know about current market conditions. With Merced in such a time of expansion, I feel this knowledge could help forecast what areas tax dollars are needed.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

My current employment in the escrow and title business, has me very interested in the development of Merced. My award of Affiliate of the Year, 2023 from the Merced County Association of Realtors, as well as my involvement as a member of the Commitee for a Safer Merced and my role in Measure C being renewed, both further evidences my commitment to our City.

What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission?
This commission will review the planning division’s proposed plans of development, and
deny or approve them to proceed to be presented to council for final adaptation.

Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission?
My everyday exposure to Merced real estate and development helps me to have a finger on the pulse of our city’s development needs and wants.

Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?

I helped develop, mentor, and train new employees and managers as well as training existing managers in use of newly developed programs and reports used in the region. In Addition, I represented DMV at the quarterly CDCR, Division of Adult Parole Operations (DAPO), Parole and Community Team (PACT) meetings held to assist parolee’s transition into the community and lead DMV’s team at the Annual Stand Down Events to assist homeless and in-need veterans and their families.

I received the Supervisors Recognition Award in
2013 for Outstanding Job Performance that contributed to the mission and goals of the Department. I currently serve on the Board of Directors for the Association of California State Supervisors (ACSS) and served as California Organization of Licensing Registration Examiners (COLRE) Vice-President, an affiliate within the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association that represents approximately 7,000 California State employees in bargaining unit 7 (BU07). I represented BU07 employees at State Legislative Hearing before the Committee on public employees, retirement, and social security on Senate Bill 9 - State employees’ retirement, and State safety membership. I am civically engaged member of our community and currently serving as the Treasurer and Scholarship Committee chairperson for the Merced branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as well as on the Board of Directors for The Merced Playhouse.

I was a previous
member of Merced County District 2 Participatory Budget Committee member and served on two Proposition 47 Scoring Panels for The Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC), in which Merced County Probation received a six-million-dollar grant from BSCC for Prop 47.

Interests & Experiences
Tell us about yourself, and why you are applying for this particular Board or Commission:

I am a Teaching Assistant at UC Merced and a member of the union UAW 2865. I hope to join the Planning Commission to strike a balance between growth and sustainability. As a Teaching Assistant, I see students struggling to pay rent and. Young people who grew up in Merced are forced to stay with their parents because, and those looking to start a family cannot purchase homes. This is because cost of living is skyrocketing, while the median income in Merced is relatively flat. Most people who work locally can barely afford to live in Merced. We must increase the supply of housing, simultaneously ensuring that new developments will not be out of reach for Merced residents. Since the City Council has much important work, they cannot look into the details of every proposed project. I hope to advise the Council on how to best manage Merced's rapid growth.

Please list your current employer and relevant volunteer experience.

Current Employer: University of California, Merced - Department of Cognitive & Information Sciences Volunteer Experience: Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Merced County; United Auto Workers
What is your understanding of the roles and responsibilities of this Board or Commission?
The Planning Commission oversees new developments, annexations, and other projects that grow the City of Merced. My understanding is that the Commission meets biweekly and provides recommendations to the City Council.

Do you have experience or special knowledge pertaining to this Board or Commission?
As a researcher at UC Merced, I study cultural evolution in the 21st century. I work with researchers in Environmental Systems and Political Science. I see developing cities across the country making the same mistakes - underprioritizing public transit, enacting overly restrictive zoning codes, and building brittle infrastructure systems. I hope to apply principles of social science and information systems to aid the City Council in avoiding these same mistakes.

I also have extensive experience in the home improvement industry, helping homeowners repair and improve their residences. As such, I understand the pros and cons of various products and can ensure that developers are creating livingplaces that will suit Merced. For example, from working in the solar industry, I have learned how solar panels improve a home's resilience, decrease the stress on the City's electrical grid, and save money for residents. Similarly, high-quality windows, doors, and insulation increase a home's energy efficiency, which will be especially important considering the extremely hot summers that Merced faces and will continue to face in the future.

Any other comments you would like to add that may assist the City Council in their decision?
Merced will grow over the decades to come. At the same time, the weather will worsen.

Together, these will bring stress to the city's municipal services such as transportation networks and aquatic infrastructure. In these times, it is paramount that our city remains resiliant and adaptive, with new neighborhoods built to house Merced residents and intergrated into the rest of the City.

I thank the Council for considering my application.
