Chief Stanfield,
This letter is to clarify the scope of services provided by Valley Animal Hospital for injured stray/un- owned animals recovered within the city limits of Merced, and the compensation for such services.

Valley Animal Hospital and its veterinarians are happy to continue to offer walk-in, semi-immediate emergency care for any injured dog, cat, or other species that the City of Merced Animal Control Officers, Peace Officers, or other agents of the City may bring into our clinic during normal business hours. We are currently open for business Monday through Friday, from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM. We are not open late-evening/night hours or on weekends. After-hour emergencies in Merced are routinely referred to out-of-town clinics in Turlock, Modesto, and Fresno.

We are requesting an increase from the current $250 per case that was last updated on October 21, 2013 to a limit of $400 per case. This is in response to our clinic bearing the financial cost for savable cases that have exceeded the current $250 cap. In 2024, we discounted $15000 in fees that exceeding the cap for Merced City Animal Control cases, and as of today's date in 2025, we have discounted $9000 in fees. The cost of doing veterinary medicine has increased in the 12 years since the original agreement was setup, and so have our operating costs. Currently an exam ($65) and X-rays ($245) for a potential animal that has been hit by a car cost $310, which allows us no room for any potential sedation or pain medications, the minimum required for such a case. A $400 limit per case will allow us to better serve these lost animals and the community who may be looking for their lost pets.

It will be at the attending veterinarian's discretion to authorize euthanasia or make a determination of care necessary to continue until an owner might be located, or it is deemed unclaimed and relinquished to the Animal Shelter or a rescue group for further care at their expense.

We want to continue assisting the community in this way and in any other way possible. Please contact me at any time at the clinic number (209)384-7387, or at my email [email protected].

Thank you,
_C. Lun
