The Council discussed additional priorities for funding. Mayor Montano suggested funding the library security improvements at $150,000 for one year (half of the original two-year request), which would include $100,000 for security services and $50,000 for maintenance and enhancements. Public Works Director Christian Di Renzo explained that security services had previously been effective, but vandalism had increased since the contract expired on September 30. Councilmember Lam asked about long-term solutions, and Assistant City Manager Cano noted that while security funding would likely be needed for several years, staff was also exploring ways to address underlying socioeconomic issues and possible infrastructure hardening. The Council reached consensus to fund Library Improved Security at $150,000 for one year.
The Council also discussed the Park Improvements Grant Matching fund. Assistant City Manager Cano explained that while Sandalwood Park was a particular priority for which design had been funded but construction funding was not yet identified, the request was made more generic to allow flexibility in pursuing grant opportunities. The Council reached consensus to fund Park Improvements Grant Matching at $200,000.
Councilmember Lien advocated for funding the Militas Youth Force summer jobs program at $80,000, noting its importance in providing youth with valuable work experience. The Council reached consensus to fund the Milpitas Youth Force at $80,000.
Councilmembers Chua and Lam discussed a previously prioritized initiative to expand Milpitas SMART transportation services to San Jose International Airport and Valley Medical Center. Staff explained that cost estimates were not yet available but would be developed by late January through discussions with RideCo, the service provider. The Council decided to wait for these estimates before allocating funding.
