COUNCIL COMMENTS & REPORTS
Vice Mayor Wright commented that back in 1974 he remembers cruising. That’s where he met his wife. Cruising is something he grew up with. Council heard the community that spoke tonight and this is something they will probably take into consideration down the road. Graffiti night went very well; it was great seeing all the cars. It was a great event for Modesto. He thanked the Kiwanis, Staff and the Police Department for their assistance.
Council Member Ricci stated that he echoes that sentiments of Vice Mayor Wright. He feels like graffiti is an untapped pool of oil and they have to decide if they want to tap that culture and make it part of the community. It’s frustrating that when there were issues previous administrations did not try to fix it and just banned it. He’s hopeful that they can work with local car clubs and neighborhoods. His goal is to make the community open to everyone. He also reported that he is proud of the hard work of staff on safe parking. Safe parking was passed at the Safety and Communities Committee last night and he thanked staff for all of their hard work. This is going to help the community and he has a lot of pride on the work that they did.
Council Member Kenoyer stated that she really enjoyed the parade and being in it. Fortunately, it was not as hot as planned. She had a good time and it was fun seeing the number of people in attendance. She is thankful to everyone that came out to enjoy the parade.
Mayor Zwahlen commented that Councilmember Kenoyer was the grand marshal of the parade and was also inducted into the legacy walk of fame.

Council Member Escutia-Braaton stated that this was a lovely showing of community that came and spoke with family tonight. She supports a community conversation as to what this might look like moving forward. It’s an opportunity to highlight activity and recreation in Modesto and enhance and include a cultural understanding and appreciation. It does make sense that the town that founded graffiti have an activity that enhances that entertainment. She also encouraged the public to be very cognizant about water safety and drownings. She read the statistics of drowning fatalities for children. She stressed the importance of water safety. The City website has many resources in that area, such as swim lessons and the Red Cross has information in Spanish in English about water safety.
