PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD
James Costello spoke in representation of a group called Modesto Citizens Action Group regarding the humanitarian crisis of homelessness and would like the City to help by providing simple basic temporary housing.
Darlene Ruiz requested the City to declare April 24th as Trevor Seever Day and asking the community to do something kind in memory of her son. She gave examples of other cities that have done something similar. She also spoke regarding a recent incident at a gas station between her and a member of the Proud Boys. Laticia Gonzales spoke regarding her son being murdered in 2017 at Mellis Park and inquired as to the status of improvements at Martin Luther King Park. She also asked for help in getting information regarding her work history. Eric Caine thanked the Council for their service. He also spoke regarding the increasing number of homeless in Modesto. He feels the lack of a Homeless Management Action Plan is a contributing factor to the vast amount of homeless in the area. There is not enough housing and services to meet the needs of the growing population. He spoke regarding the use of law to maintain order with homelessness and feels that doesn't work. He would like to see designated areas where they can sleep and congregate safely.
Marcie Walters spoke regarding the three-container system and the need to have the green waste container picked up every week. She also feels the blue container could be smaller.
John Gunderson spoke regarding the homeless and need to do better. He feels there is the need for community supported shelters and micro shelter enclaves and gave examples of other places like Eugene Oregon, the City of Redding, and Sacramento. - 3 -
5/9/2023 5:30:00 PM
He stated many churches in those areas are building enclaves on church property. He also suggested partnerships with Modesto City Schools and having ROP students at Downey High School build them.
Steve Allen spoke regarding his advocacy on behalf of victims of police killings and feels nothing has been done. He feels the town still has a lot of issues regarding violence and corruption in its law enforcement. He's hopeful for change, but he hasn't seen it yet.
Lynelle Solomon spoke regarding her community outreach with the homeless through an organization called SHARE. She feels the most pressing issue is the elderly that are experiencing homelessness due to lack of affordable housing. She told stories of several of her people she interacts with, and feels we need to treat our elderly better. Ramon Rodriguez spoke regarding the Cinco de Mayo celebration, and the unlawful assembly of people celebrating on Glenn Avenue. He feels there should be more law enforcement regarding side shows and fireworks in the area near Crows Landing. He also spoke regarding non-lethal weapons used by the police, and the danger of those as well.
SueAnne spoke regarding homelessness and feels there should be more communication and teamwork within the different departments. She would like to get involved to help be a part of the solution. There are so many causes but what are the solutions.
