M
ontebello City Council members are currently elected in “at -large” elections, in which each Councilmember is elected by the voters of the entire City. The City received a petition on March 15, 2021 alleging the City’s at-large election system violates the CVRA and requesting that the City voluntarily change its at -large system of electing Councilmembers to a district -based election system. In a by -district election system, a candidate for City Council must live in the district where the candidate wishes to represent, and only the voters of that district are entitled to vote to decide who their representative will be.
