I come from a family that has lived in Monterey County for five generations, and the land and community have played a significant role in shaping who I am. Having grown up here and now living in Monterey, I feel a strong responsibility to give back. With the pace of new development, I am motivated to help shape projects that reflect the community’s needs and character while maintaining and protecting the spaces that make Monterey unique. Access to parks and public outdoor spaces is especially important to me, as they are essential to community health and connection, and are a consistent part of my daily life.

My background in landscape architecture and my work as Planning Studio Manager at National Fitness Campaign over the past four years have given me a strong foundation in understanding how thoughtful design can positively impact daily life. Our work focuses on bringing free outdoor fitness infrastructure to cities and schools, and my role involves analyzing master plans and identifying optimal locations for equipment that provide equitable access. Through this experience, I have developed a strong understanding of local governments, park systems, and how access to well-designed spaces can meaningfully improve community members’ daily lives. I would value the opportunity to apply this perspective to decisions that expand and improve access to parks and recreation spaces.

I love California. I've lived half my life in San Jose, San Francisco, and more recently, Salinas and Monterey. My family believes in always leaving a place better than you found it, being supportive and friendly with neighbors, and having an excellent relationship with the landlord, when not an owner. My mother worked for Welcome Wagon in 3 states and was proud to always welcome new neighbors with something she cooked or baked. Being a good neighbor, good friend, and good hostess are traits Mom instilled in me, that I would be happy to share my perspectives with the Council.

Every place I've lived (9 cities so far), my family has been involved with the neighborhood association, or the HOA. I would be happy to serve my community by learning more about the proposed and approved improvement projects in and around Monterey.

During my career, I focused on K-12 Social Studies classroom resources and had the honor of learning from our partnership with National Geographic. I would bring the knowledge that curiosity and discovery of our outdoors enrich not just our youth but community members of all ages. I am also concluding my third (volunteer) year on the Monterey County Civil Grand jury, this year as Foreperson, and have experienced the satisfaction of working in collaboration with a team with different perspectives. In addition, I have just completed an excellent credential in Public Leadership (from Harvard Kennedy School of Government) and would love to put my understanding of policy, data-driven decision making, and public leadership into action. It would be an honor to volunteer with the City of Monterey's Parks and Recreation Commission and with the City Council.

The development of green spaces and the upkeep of community gathering locales, such as parks for our citizens of all ages, build a sense of community. I have always lived close to parks (currently Veteran's Park) and believe our parks and community centers provide the opportunity (without cost) to gather, enjoy the beauty of our area, exercise, sponsor or take part in events, improve our health, and simply enjoy our beautiful city. The Monterey Sports Center is a treasure my family and I enjoy; I would be proud to be part of a commission to help maintain our community areas and brainstorm new possibilities while taking into consideration the City's budget and priorities.

I was appointed to this position before, but declined in deference to the incumbent who served in the position for many years. I believe the NCIP is a great example of grassroots involvement in local/neighborhood issues, and I would like to be a part of that. I have a lot to learn but feel confident I can serve as a strong alternate with the incumbent's assistance. Representatives from the Old Town Neighborhood Association have also encouraged me to apply for this position.

NCIP Old Town Vacancy-Support for Joe Livernois
From Nancy Soule of Old Town <[email protected]> Date Wed 4/22/2026 11:34 AM
To City Clerk's Office Team <[email protected]>
Please know that Joe Livernois would do an outstanding job representing Old Town on the NCIP, to fill the vacancy. As a journalist, he knows how to look widely at a number of issues, yet also hone in on individual projects. He is well known in Old Town and attends our functions, so he would be able to interact with our neighborhood association and residents. I highly recommend him.

As a current library board member, I have been working with my colleagues and with library staff on a number of important initiatives, and would like the opportunity to help bring some of those to fruition. These include physical upgrades to the library as outlined in our recent NCIP proposal, and have in the past included a feasibility study, strategic planning, advocacy activities, and helping to define the role of the library in our community. Colleagues on the board have urged me to serve another term, and I believe that I will be able to help them accomplish some of the tasks before us. I love our library! And want it to continue to be the welcoming space for all that it has become.

Having served on the Board through crises like the pandemic, and having participated in a number of planning activities, I believe I have a pretty good understanding of where the library is going, where it needs to go, and what its needs and responsibilities are. I also have worked extensively with the Friends and Foundation group at the library in their efforts to support the library both physically and financially. I bring to the table many years of management and leadership experience through my former position as Dean of the College of Science at CSU Monterey Bay, where responsibilities included planning, budgeting and personnel management in a collaborative environment. And I strongly believe in empowering and supporting the library leadership and helping them to achieve their goals, working together with the board.
