A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF MONTEREY

PARK, CALIFORNIA, DECLARING AND RECOGNIZING THE MONTH
OF APRIL 2026 AS NATIONAL PICKLEBALL MONTH

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Monterey Park as follows:

SECTION 1: The City Council finds as follows:

A. Pickleball, introduced as a recreational game in 1965, is a lively, active paddle sport combining the elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Its creation stems from several families from Washington State who used their badminton court and random sporting equipment to entertain their children during summer vacations.

B. The name pickleball was inspired by the term "pickle boat" in rowing, referring to boats with mismatched crews, which resonated with the game's eclectic mix of sports elements.

C. Pickleball promotes physical and mental well-being, social interaction, and community engagement, fostering friendships and a sense of camaraderie among players.

D. Key pickleball statistics from The Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) Topline Participation Report 2026 estimate pickleball players in the United States to be 24.3 million in 2025, a 171.8% increase since 2023. The average player age is 34.8 years old, with 18–44-year-olds making up over 70% of participation. There are now over 22,000 places in the United States to play pickleball and in 2025, $1.8 billion was generated in the pickleball market.

E. Pickleball continues its incredible rise after being named the fastest-growing sport in the United States for the fourth consecutive year. It is a global phenomenon, with millions of players worldwide.

F. The sport continues to expand in Monterey Park, with 15 dedicated courts at various city locations: Barnes Park, Barnes Park Gymnasium, Bella Vista Park, and Sierra Vista Park. The City offers leagues and recreational programs encouraging residents to live healthy, active lifestyles.

G. National Pickleball Month, observed annually in April, is an opportunity to raise awareness about the sport's benefits, encourage new participants, and celebrate the players, coaches, and everyone contributing to its growth.
