I wish to serve on this commission because I feel like it would be a good fit. I have been doing art since I was in the womb. I live and breathe art every day, and I feel very connected to it. I have lived in Moreno Valley since I was born and attended Moreno Valley Unified School District schools. My family and I are active in the community and our local church. I have always felt like things looked pretty bland. I feel like I am the right person to help bring color to Moreno Valley. I am currently a junior in high school, and I plan to apply to an art school after graduation, where I can pursue art as a career. I believe serving on the arts commission will help me gain a broader understanding of city leadership in the arts and help me when I apply to colleges.
List any education, training, or special skills, you have which may be relevant or of particular use to this Commission:
I have previously assisted as a volunteer with Music Changing Lives. This is a non-profit that helps bring fine arts programming to underserved youth across the Inland Empire. My mom is a board member, so I have first-hand knowledge of planning initiatives, working with city officials, and working with the community to bring forth ideas. I have also served as a youth representative on the superintendent's youth leadership committee. I am currently enrolled in art classes, and I have a passion for seeing art thrive in every environment. I am a great problem solver, very creative, and very driven towards my goals. I believe art is all around us and that it takes strong leadership to help others see that, too. This is what I can bring to this commission.
Explain briefly your understanding of what this Commission does, including its powers and limitations.
I understand that a commission does not have any legal authority but specifically, for an arts commission, I believe we have the power to inspire and help people see the beauty of art. We can advocate for beautification across our city and artistic ways as well as programming that will encourage our in various genres across our city. Some limitations might be that the commission cannot just approve a project, but it has to go through the correct process. Sometimes, this can make things move slower, but it doesn't mean that they will not move.
What do you hope to accomplish by your participation?
What I hope to accomplish by my participation is to build my leadership skills while helping increase the arts in Moreno Valley. I look forward to broadening my understanding of City processes. I also think this commission would help my art ability and knowledge. I assume there would be other art enthusiasts serving on this commission who are older than me and would be able to offer wisdom in this field. I have dreams to one day get my art into the world, and it can start by helping get other people's art there first. Lastly, I want to brighten Moreno Valley with all the beautiful types of art that exist.
List any employment, volunteer work, or membership in a service/community organization that you have served on, or are now a member of. Please provide the name(s) of the agencyies) and dates served: I have been a volunteer with Malcolm's Heart Inc. for the last 4 years. This is a non-profit that helps caregivers and families battling Alzheimer's and dementia. I have helped set up and coordinate community events, as well as events for seniors, where I have served in many different volunteer capacities. I have also served as a volunteer with Music Changing Lives for the last 4 years. I have assisted in leadership planning retreats, the State of the Youth conference, and community events. I also helped clean and set up the first urban garden in San Bernardino, CA. Lastly, I was on the superintendent student leadership committee. On this committee, we gave input on the direction of the school district and our schools from a student perspective and offered key insights for change.
What other areas of interest do you have in our City government? My main interest in city government is helping push the arts, but I would also like to do things that help bring safe, safe, and fun activities for our teenagers.
Would you be available for meetings during the day I or evening? Attendance of at least one (1) meeting is required prior to the appointment.
Date(s) of the meeting(s) attended: I was not aware of meetings but could attend on 4th Wednesday at 6p, prior to the appointment, if selected.
