2 Public Works initiated an intersection review in 2024 for Dunes and Main - a wise move - though the hired consultant determined the intersection wasn't as dangerous as PWAB members, council members, police officers, pedestrians, and residents believed. Among the criteria not met to warrant a 4-way stop was this item: "Five or more crashes in a 12-month period correctible by multi-way stop installation." The purpose of my sharing these crashes is to supplement the incident list maintained by MBPD. Through no fault of theirs, not all accidents are reported, and it seems likely that the publicly available data used by our traffic consultant underestimated the actual incidents taking place at Dunes and Main. Two in one week may not be statistically relevant but their dynamics are consistent with other near misses and actual hits we have seen: one or more drivers stopping at what they believe to be a stop sign, which then gives another driver (or pedestrian) a false sense of safety to cross in front of a third car that fails to slow.
To my knowledge, no one has died or been seriously injured here, which is good news, but "five crashes or more in a 12-month period" remains attainable under current conditions. For reporting purposes, I'd encourage nearby residents and businesses to submit incidents or safety concerns to the city. This will ensure our information is more accurate when we revisit this discussion in the future.
