Whatdoes“CommunityForAll”meantoyou?
Dr. Brandon Gessert
I have attended a few meetings over the many years I have lived in Mountain View. I first attended when I was much younger. It was part of a Boy Scouts of America outing where we learned about the public offices in the city of Mountain View. During that meeting I was observing and taking notes as to write a short report as to how the meeting went. This is where my initial fascination with local government began. It was great to see the passionate people in this community voice their opinions in hopes to generate change to fit the ever evolving face of our city. More recently I attended some meetings virtually during the beginning of the pandemic. During these meetings my main goal was to observe and monitor the outcomes as I work for a small business and wanted to stay up to date on all the proceedings in my community.

The goal of“Community for All”to me is the epicenter of what makes Mountain View what it is. Growing up in this city for my entire life has led me to see the immense diversity we have in this community. I believe it is the job of the citizens to continue to work and shape the community to match the demographic that it currently serves. Even more so in my adult years, as I have come to realize the ever changing demographic, housing market, wealth disparities, and every day challenges that the city of Mountain View faces this saying remains true and ever important. We must work to continue to be a “Community for All” to match the needs of those who have lived here their whole lives as well as for those who have just moved here. " Community for All” means finding the policies and actions that evenly match the needs of every demographic of our city, and when that is not possible it means making equal sacrifice for the better future of the city of Mountain View.

I believe that this issue is at the forefront of evolution for Mountain View and as a young professional I believe that I have an interesting insight into the issue of affordable housing and community expansion. With planning for future housing it is all about the balance of maintaining the high quality of life that we have created over the years in Mountain View while creating affordable options for those who have not yet bought into the housing market in our city. In terms of R3 districts I believe the city is already well on its way to solving the problem.

Creating high quality options such as stacked flats and apartment complexes that are in specific districts not intermingling with single family homes creates an environment that benefits all citizens of Mountain View. Maintaining the integrity of these separate housing ideals maintains that all citizen needs are met, whether it is a four bedroom home for your family or a small affordable apartment for a young professional just starting out their life. If we slightly loosen construction restrictions in specific areas that allow for larger more affordable apartment buildings and not just high cost row houses we can create a large stock of new housing options for all the diverse communities that exist here. However, with this comes the issue again of balance. We must integrate them accordingly in specific zones as to not overrun the smaller neighborhood single family homes and ruin the family style community that already exists here in Mountain View. I believe that through R3 district changes we can truly acheive " Community for All"
The topic that I find most impactful for our current state of affairs is the "Intentional Development & Housing Options" list of goals, but that is addressed in the following question.

One of the next most important goals to me is the updating and maintaining of the "Livability and Quality of Life" goal list. I believe that this section is where our city will acquire the most growth in community and culture. We must maintain a space that families young and old can enjoy and be proud of while helping the local economy. When citizens feel safe and have the appropriate outlets they put money back into that community in the form of patronizing local businesses, restaurants, entertainment, and services. By specifically focusing on a few items from this section of the action plan such as, continuing to work with the Visual Arts Committee to encourage public art and working to prioritize preserving the character of the downtown core, we can create a city that citizens not only enjoy, but are proud to be a part of.

To whomever it may concern,
My name is Dr. Brandon Gessert and I am a resident of Mountain View, CA and I have been for my entire life. I grew up back when the farm used to be by the El Camino hospital and I have been around to see all of the changes and advancements since then. I believe our city is a beautiful place for all people to come together and to thrive as a community. I have seen what has changed over the years and always admired those working to make positive changes so that we may continue to grow as a community. This is why I wish to be appointed to the city council. I am twenty-eight years old and I think I can bring an interesting new perspective to the team. I believe as our city grows, more and more people and families around my age are looking for a city to call home and I think Mountain View can be that place for everyone. Since I was born and raised in this city I believe I offer an interesting perspective, one of advancement, but also one of balance while continuing to maintain the style of community we currently and always have had.

I believe that one of our cities toughest issues currently is housing. We have had RV’s and vans for years jumping around from different streets all around town because we do not have enough affordable housing. This is a delicate issue because as I mentioned above it is important as a city we maintain our original values and community feeling. On city council I believe that I can help to work towards balance between the two worlds of advancement and more housing, without sacrificing single family homes and becoming a large city with nothing but apartment complexes everywhere.

For us to be able to sustain and maintain an influx of people to the bay area and more specifically Mountain View, we need to continue to support our downtown and small local businesses as much as we can. If appointed to city council I believe it is crucial for us to create events and spaces where these small businesses can thrive. If we are able to maintain a vibrant downtown that citizens enjoy coming to we can help those small local businesses to not just survive, but to thrive. I currently work in a small business and understand the struggles day to day that run through an owners mind. If we as a city council can work to make that life as stress-free as possible through policy and outreach, I believe we can maintain a good working relationship with all local businesses.

I understand that I am on the younger side and do not have much experience in terms of government work, but I believe I more than make up for that with the passion I feel for my hometown. If appointed I would learn quickly and work diligently to make sure that every single person in our community feels as excited and proud as I do to be able to call Mountain View home. Just like the motto for the city council states, Mountain View is a “Community for All”.

Thank you for your time,
- Dr. Brandon Gessert D.C.
