Mountain View City Council
500 Castro Street
Mountain View, CA 94041
Dear Mayor Hicks and Members of the City Council,
Please find atached my Applicaon, Resume and FPPC Form 700 in support of my applicaon to be considered to fill the Council vacancy created by Councilmember Lieber’s resignaon from the Council. At the outset, I would like to state that I am subming my name for consideraon to complete the unexpired term for this seat ONLY, and that I have no desire, nor intenon to seek re- elecon in 2024.
I am applying because I can “hit the ground running” based on my years of experience on the Council as well as my connued involvement with the City through my parcipaon on the Downtown Commitee, engagement in local nonprofits and work with the Chamber of Commerce. My desire is to ease the transion during the next two years in preparaon for a newly elected member in 2024.
While I ancipate any number of qualified applicants, I believe my 16 years of elected experience, 2 years as Mayor, 5 years as a Parks and EPC Commissioner as well as my experience as President of the League of California Cies and service to the Naonal League of Cies, sets me apart from other applicants. Addionally, my 16 years of service is an open book as to my policy beliefs.
As for the issues facing our City, I connue to believe that Housing, both market rate and affordable, is the single greatest challenge that we face as a community. While Mountain View has made great strides in housing development over the years, and has led the Bay Area in this regard, there is sll much to be done and I believe that addressing the job-housing balance is one of the primary means of addressing the issue.
Finally, as a long term local small business owner, and long-term member of the Chamber of Commerce, I have been very involved in advancing the interests of Mountain View’s business community for decades, and connue to do so to this day, as evidenced by my current posion as Vice Chair and Chair Elect of the Chamber. (A posion from which I would resign if selected) Our businesses are also constuents, and it has been my long term pracce to meet with whomever wishes to meet and I intend to connue that tradion.
Clearly the Council cannot fully funcon with only 6 members for two more years, and as the Council knows, there is a steep learning curve for new members before they are fully funconing members of the leadership team. I believe my extensive experience, record and lack of long term obligaons makes me a strong applicant.
Sincerely,
R. Michael Kasperzak
