The maps of Safe Routes to School featured on the City's website (Attachments 1&2) show Terra Bella Avenue as a recommended route to Crittenden, Theuerkauf and Stevenson Schools. Terra Bella is home to about 50 RVs, trailers, vans and other habitable vehicles.
Under those conditions, it is not a safe route for cyclists and pedestrians. Very few students (only those who have no alternative) use it currently. That is likely to change when the family-oriented housing developments planned for east Terra Bella are occupied.
The Ameswell bridge over Stevens Creek looks like it will be a point of conflict between trail and bridge cyclists (see Attachment 3). That would be aggravated by its situation at a curve in the trail, visual obstructions, downsloping approaches, proximity to the notorious 101 underpass, and little room to widen the intersection. Pedestrians are likely to be victims of the prevailing disregard for trail rules, etiquette and common sense (see Attachment 4).
The City should carefully look this gift horse in the mouth to see what might be done to mitigate the hazards.
Thank you for your attention.
