Subject: Concerns regarding the poor aesthetic and mismanagement of the Castro Street Pedestrian Mall

Dear Director Murdock, Director Cameron, and City Manager McCarthy, I am a resident living just a few blocks from Castro Street, and I am writing to express my strong disapproval of the current direction the city has taken with our downtown.

The current aesthetic—defined by gaudy street paint and adult playground games like cornhole and oversized chess—is, frankly, classless. What used to be a professional, high-quality downtown destination has been turned into an undignified eyesore that feels more like an adult daycare center than a serious community hub.

Furthermore, I am deeply concerned about the proposed "Entertainment Zone" under SB 969. Adding open-container alcohol consumption to this already tacky environment will only increase noise, litter, and public intoxication in our neighborhood. It is a commercialization of public space that ignores the quality of life for those of us who live nearby.

If the city’s best vision for a car-free Castro Street is cheap paint and lawn games, then the experiment has failed. I would much rather see the street reopened to cars and returned to its functional, professional state than continue to endure this "vibrant" mess.

I expect these concerns regarding neighborhood character and public safety to be addressed before any further expansion of the "Entertainment Zone" or additional adult playground installations.

Thank you.

David Simmen
