CC-12-HRC (Rev. 06-04-25) 1 of 3
Human Relations Committee Applicant Name: Merry Yen
Please share why you want to be appointed to the Human Relations Committee.
Given the current political climate, I am motivated to serve those in the community who are at risk. This includes minority groups, including families withi children who resides and work within the City & County. I have reviewed the HRC Work Plan for Fiscal Year 2025-26 and believe that i can add value to the HRC's current efforts with regards to outreach, especially within the neighborhood associations as I serve on the committee to organize events for the Cuesta Park Neighborhood Association (CPNA).
I have 9 years of experience serving on the Mountain View Downtown Committee, with 3 years serving as Chair. Serving on the Mountain View Downtown Committee was (and continues to be) one of my proudest achievements as a resident of Mountain View. During 2020, the DTC recommended the closure of Castro Street to vehicular traffic and turning it into a pedestrian mall. This particular effort is something that continues to serve our community - with safer streets for pedestrians (especially children); and increased walkability for the downtown area.
Given the breadth of my experiences serving in my neighborhood association, my experiences serving on DTC, as well my own interests in serving our minority groups, I would appreciate your consideration for my application to serve on the HRC.
Please list the community organizations in which you have participated and describe your participation and any official role/position you may have held.
I am one of the main organizers of the Cuesta Park Neighborhood Association. In addition to our annual Ice Cream Social, which attracts over 400+ families from the neighborhood & beyond; I also serve on the committee that organizes the CPNA Summer Concert Series - live music events that are enjoyed by residents of our community, as well as the Mayor, the Vice Mayor, and various City Council members.
As mentioned above, I served on the Mountain View Downtown Committee for 9 years, with 3 years as Chairperson.
Most recently, I served on the campaign to help re-elect Pat Showalter, former Mayor and current City Council member.
I am a graduate of the SV@Home Leadership Civic Leadership Program, Class of 2023.
I am a graduate of Leadership Mountain View, class of 2019.
Please describe the qualifications or experience you possess (such as employment and/or education) that you feel would be an asset to the Human Relations Committee.
I am extremely organized, both in my professional life and my personal life. I believe I would contribute to keeping the HRC meetings on track and get through the agenda items for each meeting.
I have excellent written & oral communication skills. I believe I would contribute to HRC in terms of outreach efforts in the community. I speak Mandarin fluently and can converse in Spanish.
My experiences working with Mountain View City Staff have all been positive - I would love the opportunity to partner with Staff on ongoing projects and initiatives.
I exert positivity and optimism, which I believe will go toward making the HRC meetings more lively & fun! I am an immigrant myself and became a naturalized US Citizen as an adult. I believe my experiences as an immigrant/minority group would provide unque perspectives toward the HRC and its missions.
