Tank house located at 252 Monroe Drive
Extensive Dry Rot and Structural Deterioration
The structure has experienced significant
deterioration over time. Dry rot is present throughout
the building and is located on multiple exterior and
interior surfaces and walls. This deterioration affects siding, framing components, trim elements, and other
wood materials that would otherwise contribute to the
historic fabric of the structure.

The widespread presence of dry rot indicates
long-term exposure to moisture and deferred
maintenance, resulting in the loss or severe
degradation of original materials. In many locations,
the affected wood elements have either failed
structurally or require full replacement rather than
repair. When original materials must be replaced on
such a large scale, the integrity of historic materials and workmanship— key factors used in determining
historic significance— is substantially diminished.

Because so many of the building’s remaining
elements are compromised by decay, preserving the
structure in its current form would require extensive
reconstruction using new materials. Such
reconstruction would further reduce the authenticity
of the property as a historic resource, as the resulting structure would consist largely of modern
replacement components rather than original historic
fabric.

Tank House located at 515 Villa Street
Construction: The structure dates to around
1900; its use as a tank house appears to
have occurred sometime between the 1920s
and 1940s.

Historic status: The City of Mountain View's
historic-resource documentation lists the
Tank House at 515 Villa Street as a Local
Register resource, with a construction date of
1890 in the City's historic-resource inventory.

Historical research indicates it was originally
an accessory structure and was later
converted into a residence. A well cap and
structural framing consistent with supporting
a large elevated water tank were found
during restoration.

The structure is essentially a traditional
California tank house— a small enclosed wood
structure built around and below an elevated
water-storage tank.

Key characteristics:

Two-story vertical form — a relatively narrow,
tall structure rather than a broad building.

Wood siding — traditional horizontal wood
siding gives it an agricultural/rural character.

Gabled roof — a simple pitched roof caps the
upper portion.

Elevated water tank — the defining feature is
the large tank positioned above the
occupied/utility level.

Wood structural framing — the elevated tank is
supported by substantial timber framing.

Simple windows and doors — openings are
utilitarian rather than highly decorative.

Agricultural character — the design reflects the
orchards and agricultural properties that
historically surrounded Mountain View.

Tank enclosure — the tank is visually integrated
into the upper portion of the building rather than
simply sitting exposed on a platform.
