Dear Napa City Council Members,
As I’m not currently attending public meetings in-person due to COVID, I just wanted to take a quick moment tonight to encourage you to support and take action on the requests that the students from Schools 4 Climate Action will present to you tomorrow. The time is now to quicken policy implementation on declaring a climate emergency and taking immediate and steady action to stabilize warming and give our children the chance at a livable future.
As I’ve shared in previous public meetings, I view the S4CA presentation, and similar presentations and demonstrations taking place in cities and towns across the world, as a “last ditch effort” by our youth to save their future. They understand what is at stake, that our time is up, and we must take smart, swift action now.
I urge you to meet this moment and make real climate policy change your legacy as public leaders. From my view, addressing our climate emergency is deeply intertwined with addressing issues of racial and social inequality. The most vulnerable on Earth are already experiencing the greatest climate impacts.
Please give our youth a glimpse of hope by taking real climate policy action in 2022.
Thank you for all you do to support our children and protect your community.

Dear Mayor Sedgley and City Councilmembers Alessio, Luros, Painter and Narvaez,
We are writing to you on behalf of Napa Climate NOW!, an organization of concerned citizens in Napa County, to urge you to adopt a Climate Emergency Resolution.
Such a resolution will put the city of Napa in good company with more than 2,000 cities and counties in the Bay Area, California, and around the world who now recognize that the pace of climate change is accelerating, posing a major threat to our homes, lives, and livelihoods.
For
instance, the City of Calistoga’s Climate Emergency Resolution, passed in August, calls for "immediate climate emergency action at all levels of government" and commits to joining "a growing list of communities committed to a goal of net zero climate pollution, measured in terms of net contribution to excess trapped heat, by or before 2030."
As you are aware, last summer, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change declared in its Sixth Assessment Report that it is “unequivocal” that humans have caused climate change, and reaffirmed that we are rapidly approaching the point of no return as global temperatures continue to rise and the earth’s natural systems which buffer the planet against further warming break down. UN Secretary-General António Guterres referred to the report as a “code red for humanity.” This is a true emergency that impacts every jurisdiction, large and small, at every level of operations – housing, air quality, health care, infrastructure, social and environmental justice, open space, industry, and of course, operating revenues.
There is nothing comfortable about confronting this challenge, and it will take courageous action to reverse course. This means making a meaningful commitment to doing no more harm, and to achieving net zero climate pollution by 2030.
Climate change should now be one
of the filters through which all policy decisions going forward are considered.
It is, in short, a
true emergency.
Our kids get it.
Their entire lives are being shaped by it.
Indeed, as the increasing wildfires,
intensifying storms, deepening droughts, and unparalleled die-offs of ocean and land species are signaling, all of our lives are being shaped by it, even as we wake up, go to work, and go about each day as if things were normal. The problem with exponential change is that it is difficult to see day-to-day, but it means that yesterday is no longer a good indicator of what’s coming tomorrow.
There is particular power in declaring this as an “emergency.” All of the other jurisdictions
that have wrestled with this language and its implications have come to the same conclusion.
The city of Calistoga is a case in point, providing for specific goals and actions within its resolution.
By taking the lead on this important issue, the City Council of Napa will further empower the business community and its citizens to take the necessary steps forward.
In conclusion, we strongly endorse the Schools for Climate Action in its request for Napa to pass a Climate Emergency Resolution.
NVUSD has already done so, and the science
supporting urgent action with a goal of net zero climate pollution by 2030 is clearly on their side. Please take this step to reassure our next generation that Napa respects their right to inherit a livable world. We stand ready to assist you in any way we can to implement such a resolution in a way that benefits the residents of Napa.

Dear Mary,
I am wri ng in support of Beverly Shotwell’s Applica on to serve on the City of Napa Planning Commission.
I have known Beverly for approximately 10 years. We served together on some volunteer nonprofit ac vi es. Importantly, we served together on the City of Napa Cultural Heritage Commission from 2014-2020.
Beverly has the knowledge, skills, and experience to be a great Planning Commissioner. She is insigh ul and passionate and always adds so much value to any discussion of the issues. She genuinely cares about our city, its inhabitants, and its future. While serving with her on the CHC, I found her ability o quickly get to the heart of the ma er and work to achieve consensus to be a considerable asset to the team. She consistently grasped the key issues, provided penetra ve analysis and asked ques ons know one had thought of. I am certain she would be a considerable asset to the Planning Commission.
It is without reserva on that I recommend Beverly Shotwell to an appointment to serve on the City of Napa Planning Commission.

I have known Beverly for almost 20 years and can a est to her boundless energy and enthusiasm for the City of Napa. She has already served the City in numerous official and volunteer roles over the years and will bring a wealth of local knowledge to the posi on.
Her work with the Cultural Heritage Commission has specifically prepared her understanding of how we can respect our community’s past as we walk into this exci ng next phase of the City’s growth.
She brings a deep civic pride, regard for procedure and protocol, and years of experience as a local homeowner and business person in the local wine industry.

All,
We have become aware that Beverly Shotwell has applied for a posi on on the Napa City Planning Commision and we wanted to let you all know that we strongly support her candidacy.
As you know, DJ has Chaired the Napa Valley Opera House Board of Trustees since January 2018.
As you also know, the Board has gone through the process of selling the Opera House and dealing with many complicated and difficult issues like covid, including successfully dealing with the City loan.
As a member of our Board, Beverly has been a steadfast, always knowledgeable and always posi ve part of all of our Board delibera ons through this long, complex and difficult slog leading to crea on of our new Endowment. As a volunteer like all of us, she has always done the homework, and given us her solid and straigh orward counsel throughout this long three year process!
In addi on, Beverly’s serious interest regarding the historical aspects of our City, as well as common sense approach to issues can only be a posi ve as the Planning Commission has to balance new growth and development with important aspects of Napa’s historic past.
Finally, Beverly is best at listening to and factoring in all interests in terms of what will be the some mes conten ous and complicated issues that we rely on the Commission to deal with. And she is a hard worker to boot!!
Again, in our opinion, Beverly would be an outstanding appointment that would serve our community well.
As always, we thank you in advance for your serious considera on of our views.

I hope this finds you well. I know that you are incredibly busy, both with your family, your prac ce, and your posi on as a Council Member.
I have enjoyed my first year as a Napa City Planning Commissioner. I hope I have served our community well. I tried hard to do so.
I wanted to recommend Paul Kelly for another term. He is truly without ego, and has no agenda other than to serve our community as a Planning Commissioner. During my first year he served as Chair, and I was most impressed with both his thoroughness and his though ulness. He came to every mee ng very well prepared.
I was impressed the en re year.
I know that you have many qualified candidates to chose from. No ma er whom you chose, I am sure our Planning Commission will be well served.
Kind Regards
Bob

Dear City Clerk,
It is my pleasure to recommend Ricardo Hurtado for reappointment in this upcoming term.
Ricardo has not only been a mentor through my educa on but a leader for the Hispanic community in the Napa Valley. Through his year in the community has shown leadership among all social groups and a role model to those who do not have a voice. Ricardo is not only a community member but a son and husband to a lovely family. His pride and joy has always been advoca ng for those whose voices are o en not heard.
Ricardo's leadership shines while working for local organiza ons such as UpValley Family Centers, COPE and now OLE Health. His experience while working with diverse ages and backgrounds have allowed him to gain knowledge of what the community needs. He is able to bring a public health perspec ve into the Planning Commission. In order to con nue discussing social issues among all socioeconomic groups in Napa County we need Ricardo to con nue being part of the Napa Planning Commission. As a La na myself I have faith in Ricardo that he will con nue to advocate for; La communidad, Raza and the Napa Valley Residents.
Ricardo is a role model for many first genera on families, I have no doubt that he has built a legacy among our Napa Valley Community and con nues vo ng for the best of the interest of what is right. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further ques ons.
Sincerely,

To whom it may concern,
Please consider my comments in the decision making process for Ricky Hurtado's re elec on term to serve on the Napa Planning Commission -
I have known Ricky for several years now both on a professional and personal level; a common theme that has always been present is his love for our community and his determina on to see this town be as inclusive as possible and not forget those who make Napa what it is. Ricky goes above and beyond in ensuring he stays in tune with it's residents, their accomplishments, but most importantly, their challenges. Understanding the challenges folks face is a fundamental prac ce in the architectural planning of our city, I can truthfully say, Ricky is an individual who listens well, and works even harder. I am proud to know a Napa na ve like Ricky.

I am writing in support of Ricky Hurtado to be reappointed to the City of Napa Planning Commission. I have worked with Ricky for a number of years and have seen first-hand his dedication to the community. Ricky is a problem solver and deeply committed to serving our city. He supported the 77-unit affordable housing project on Shelter Avenue because he knew that Napa was in tremendous need of affordable housing. He voted in favor of passing a use permit for a childcare center, seeing the serious lack of childcare facilities for Napa’s working and low-income families
As one of two Latinos on the Planning Commission in a city where Latinos make up 37% of the population, we need Ricky’s voice more than ever. He is bilingual and understands the issues of the Latino community. He also works as the Community Outreach Manager of Ole Health, bringing his public health perspective to the Planning Commission. Ricky is there to make sure that all Napans are included in the planning and growth of our city. He understands the complexities of Napa’s growth as it balances the needs of high income, low income, older residents and young families. Thank you for this opportunity to voice my support for Ricky Hurtado’s reappointment to the Planning Commission.

Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
I am writing in support of reappointing Ricky Hurtado to the City of Napa's Planning Commission.
Ricky has two qualifications that are critical as the City finalizes the General Plan update: 1) he served on the General Plan Advisory Committee and is intimately familiar with the issues and concerns that form the basis of the draft Plan and 2) he is a very involved member of Napa's Latinx community and able to provide access to the viewpoints and priorities of Napa's Latinx residents.
I hope you will recognize the value of his service and reappoint him to the Planning Commission.

Hello,
I hope this email finds you well and that you’re off to a great start of the new year. I’m writing this email in support of Ricky Hurtado, who’s been serving on the City of Napa Planning Commission since January of 2021.
When it comes to the future of our city, I consider extremely important to have young and diverse representation in the decisions that affect our future. I have witnessed Ricky’s dedication and commitment to the community and openness to learn and have difficult conversations to ensure that our minorities are heard. After all, Napa’s demographics are rapidly changing, and it is only fair to adapt to these changes.
Not only do I feel represented by Ricky as a young Latino who’s active in the community, but by getting to know him, I’m 100% sure that his genuine kindness allows for inclusivity in his point of view and keeps those that are most in need as a priority in his decisions.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you.

I am writing to urge you to retain Ricky Hurtado as
Planning Commission member.
While I am not a resident of the City of Napa, I am the Chair of the Napa County Democratic Central
Committee and I have seen what Ricky does for his
community.
He has shown for years his dedication to the citizens
of Napa be they the workers in the vineyards and
hospitality as well as the
business owners or those citizens with environmental
concerns. His concern for the unhoused and
underhoused is commendable. Napa needs the kind of
leadership that Ricky has shown for years. As a young
Latino he inspires other Latinos to be involved in their city and he does this by representing them as one of
the first Latinos to sit on the planning commission.
Ricky has demonstrated an understanding that growth
will come to Napa but that it needs to be done in a
way that protects the environment and the need to
include the minority community needs.
I strongly urge you to vote to keep Ricky Hurtado on
the Napa City Planning Commission.
