PROCLAMATION
Women’s History Month
March 2024
WHEREAS, During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the countless women who strive to create a more equitable and inclusive society by eliminating bias and discrimination in all forms; and WHEREAS, The origins of Women’s History trace back to a weeklong commemoration in Santa Clara, California, in 1978, which has evolved into a nationwide commemoration thanks to the advocacy and perseverance of women and allies across the nation; and WHEREAS, The theme of the 2024 Celebration of Women’s History Month is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion”. The City is fortunate to have many women and organizations working to advance these causes; and WHEREAS, We draw inspiration from Betty Rhodes who advocated for senior citizens’ rights and the dignity of aging leaving behind a legacy. Betty began her journey when she was 63 years old and was appointed to the Napa County Commission on Aging, later serving on the Board of Directors of the Napa/Solano Area Agency on Aging, and through her advocacy work with the Napa County District Attorney’s Elder Abuse Planning and Prevention Council she was able to support the Napa County Caregiving Ordinance also known as “Betty’s Law”; and WHEREAS, We are inspired by the words of President Carter, who said, "From the first settlers who came to our shores, from the first American Indian families who befriended them, men and women have worked together to build this nation. Too often the women were unsung and sometimes their contributions went unnoticed. But the achievements, leadership, courage, strength and love to the women who built America was as vital as that of the men whose names we know so well"; and WHEREAS, As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we are reminded that our diversity is our strength and that every woman’s story contributes to the collective narrative that shapes our community, and let us commit to being allies in the pursuit of equity, diversity and inclusion, and let us pledge to uplift and support the women among us who lead the way in this noble endeavor.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Scott Sedgley, Mayor of the City of Napa, along with the City Council, do hereby recognize March 2024 as “Women’s History Month,” a time to honor and celebrate the women who advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion, and to inspire future generations to continue this vital work.
