WHEREAS, all people are born free and equal in dignity and fundamental human rights, and no one should live in fear of persecution or violence arising from sexual orientation or gender identity; and WHEREAS, the month of June was designated Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising in 1969 and celebrate the LGBTQ+ Community's fight for equal rights; and
WHEREAS, the tireless dedication of advocates and allies has led to increased support for LGBTQ+ rights, celebrating Pride Month as a community also influences awareness, visibility, and fosters dialogue to strengthen alliances, build acceptance, and advance equal rights for LGBTQ+ people; and
WHEREAS, the theme for Napa Pride 2024, "Love, Light, Liberation | Amor, Luz, Liberación," celebrates love as a fundamental human right, promotes visibility, understanding, and advocates for liberation from discrimination and inequality; and
WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ individuals are integral members of our community, enriching Napa's social fabric across various spheres of life; the City of Napa is dedicated to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and supportive environment where everyone can thrive without fear of prejudice, discrimination, violence, or hatred based on their race, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Scott Sedgley, Mayor of the City of Napa, together with the City Council, do hereby proclaim June 2024 as “Pride Month” in the City of Napa. We urge all residents to join in celebrating Napa Pride 2024, acknowledging the LGBTQ+ community’s perseverance in the pursuit of equal rights and fair treatment, and honoring their invaluable contributions to our local culture and society.
