In Recognition of Black History Month February 2025
WHEREAS, the celebration of Black History Month was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian and scholar. It became a month-long celebration in 1976; and WHEREAS, the 2025 theme, “African Americans and Labor,” focuses on the significant role that work, in all its forms, has played in the collective experiences of Black people throughout history; and WHEREAS, community organizations like People B4 Policy, and others, who have a vision to shine light on the forgotten history of Black People in this country and the Napa Valley; and WHEREAS, to honor and pay tribute to Black History is to honor and pay tribute to American History, and this we must acknowledge and practice not only in February, but all year long. The City of Napa along with the City Council practices and supports Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging through city-wide trainings and organizational awareness, recognition of important events and hiring practices that promote a diverse staff serving our community; and WHEREAS, the City of Napa continues to advance toward inclusivity in which all residents – past, present, and future – are respected and recognized for their contributions to our community, the state, the country, and the world.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Scott Sedgley, Mayor of the City of Napa, along with the City Council, do hereby recognize and celebrate February 2025 as Black History Month and encourage everyone to observe this month with appropriate programs, activities, and reflections and to continue our efforts to create a community that is more just, equitable and prosperous for all.
