PROCLAMATION
National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day
May 15, 2026
and
National Police Memorial Week
May 11- 16, 2026
WHEREAS, National Peace Officers Memorial Day was created to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of law enforcement officers who have lost their lives while serving their communities. The observance traces its origins to efforts by the Fraternal Order of Police and other law enforcement organizations in the mid-20th century who sought a national day of commemoration; and WHEREAS, since the first recorded death in 1786, there are currently more than 24,500 law enforcement officers in the United States that have made the ultimate sacrifice and been killed in the line of duty. The names of these dedicated public servants are engraved on the walls of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC; and WHEREAS, there are more than 800,000 law enforcement officers serving in communities across the United States, including the dedicated members of the Napa Police Department; and WHEREAS, May 15 is designated as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, in honor of all fallen officers and their families and U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that I, Scott Sedgley, Mayor of the City of Napa, along with the Napa City Council, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2026 as Peace Officer’s Memorial Day and May 11-16, 2026 as National Police Memorial Week in the City of Napa and thank the service of law enforcement officers in our community and in communities across the nation.
