Program Overview
Athletic Field Sod Replacement Program
Program Overview
The Newport Beach athletic field system consists of 17 fields totaling approximately 1.9 million square feet of sod. This program establishes a continuous, rotating field replacement schedule to maintain safe, level, and playable turf conditions across all city athletic fields.
1. Rotational Sod Replacement Scope
Fields are placed on a rotating two-to-four-year replacement cycle. The final schedule is determined by annual staff inspections that evaluate turf wear, weed density, and soil compaction.
• Annual Target: Approximately 650,000 square feet of Hybrid Bermuda sod replaced per fiscal year.
• Field Closures: Sites undergoing sod replacement require a four-to-six-week closure period. This window allows the new sod to root properly and establishes the wear-tolerance needed for sports use.
• Quality Control: City Park maintenance staff or a consultant landscape inspector will oversee the project to inspect incoming sod, review soil conditions, and verify installation quality.
2. Infrastructure Sub-Surface Upgrades
Sod replacement projects trigger additional infrastructure repairs and upgrades to the field. Crews perform the following work while the turf is removed:
• Irrigation Repair: Complete system checks to replace broken sprinkler heads, adjust coverage to eliminate dry spots, and optimize water efficiency. • Drainage Upgrades: Repairs or additions to sub-surface drainage lines to eliminate standing water and reduce rainout days.
• Field Leveling: Mechanical grading to smooth out dips, low spots, and bumps to ensure a safe, uniform playing surface.
3. Routine Field Maintenance Scope
In between sod replacement cycles, field crews will conduct regular organic and mechanical maintenance techniques including:
• Aeration, De-Thatching, Fertilization, Overseeding, Topdressing Athletic Field Sod Replacement Program
