SUBJECT: CONSIDERATION AND DISCUSSION OF NEW NAMES FOR THE SOCIAL SERVICES BUILDING IN HONOR OF ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Background:
This year, the Department of Social Services celebrates its 50 th birthday. In order to commemorate this milestone, the building will be renovated and renamed. There will be several events the week of the anniversary, with one event on the actual date, September 19, 2024, to mark the occasion. Staff is currently preparing for these activities.
Renovations to the building will include: new paint for the interior and exterior, new floors, new offices, a new marquee, new building sign, a commemorative plaque, a new gate, landscaping, and a new parking lot. These items will be funded through the Renovations Fund, with a current estimated budget of $300,000.
As for the week of the Anniversary, Social Services and Recreation and Parks Services are planning an open house and an evening event. Funds will be requested as part of the Fiscal Year 24-25 Budget, and costs are currently estimated to be about $30,000.
During the day-of evening event, a new name for the building will be revealed. Staff have compiled four options for City Council to begin the discussion of the new name:
1) Jesse M. Luera Community Resource Center
2) Jesse M. Luera Social Services Resource Center
3) Jesse M. Luera Family & Resource Center
4) Jesse M. Luera Resource Center
