SUBJECT: ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROJECT APPROVAL - AQUATICS PAVILION
MOSAIC MURAL
Background:
The City’s Art in Public Places Program provides a collection of permanent outdoor sculptures and artwork throughout the City. Developments having a project cost exceeding five hundred thousand ($500,000) dollars are subject to a one percent contribution to the program. The Art in Public Places fund is used to create artistic enhancements within the community that fall within the Program guidelines.
The Art in Public Places Committee (Committee) has reviewed a proposal from local artist, Lindsay Parks, who recently displayed her work at the Mary Paxon Gallery and participated in the City’s Artastic event. She has completed many mosaic projects, including several for the Downey Unified School District where she is employed and included students and one for the City of Downey. Her work consists of drawing out the design and then placing the mosaic pieces to finish the mural. Since this piece will be placed at the pool, staff and the Committee asked Ms. Parks for a design featuring elements having to do with water. Ms. Parks designed a beautiful sea horse in the ocean surrounded by waving green underwater plant life. The proposed design is attached to this report as Attachment No. 1. As part of this project, the Committee is excited to announce that Ms. Parks was asked to involve youth from the community to assist in placing the tiles to create the final design. The project will be shared through the City’s social media and request youth volunteers ages 8-18 to participate in the project. Ms.
Parks will provide safety gear and instruction to the youth volunteers.
The piece will be comprised of three 30 1/2” x 88” panels placed between the two outdoor shower enclosures as shown in Attachment No. 2. As the City is coming upon swim season the design and accrual of the materials and pre-cut tiles will begin now, but the actual installation of the piece will be in September after the Aquatic Pavilion becomes less busy. Design and scheduling have been shared with the Parks and Recreation staff.
