SUBJECT: EXTEND 2026 FIREWORKS SALES FROM JUNE 30 – JULY 4 Background:
This year marks a significant national milestone, commemorating the United States Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary) of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This historic occasion is expected to be celebrated nationwide with enhanced community events, civic engagement, and patriotic activities.
In the City, fireworks have long been an integral part of Independence Day traditions, contributing to community engagement and local nonprofit fundraising efforts through the sale of safe and sane fireworks.
Pursuant to Norwalk Municipal Code (NMC) Section 5.36.070, the sale of safe and sane fireworks is currently permitted from July 1 through July 4, between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
In recognition of the Semiquincentennial and the anticipated increase in public participation, staff proposes a one-time exception to allow fireworks sales to commence on June 30, 2026, while upholding all regulations, including permissible sales hours and operational requirements, which would remain unchanged.
Fiscal Impact:
The larger window of time for firework sales may see an increase in sales tax revenues.
However, the City may incur increased costs if additional Public Safety presence is needed to assist with compliance.
