SUBJECT: RESOLUTION NO. 26-48 - OFFICE OF TRAFFIC AND SAFETY GRANT AWARD
Background:
The City of Norwalk has been awarded a $45,000 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to implement a Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program from October 1, 2026, through September 30, 2027. This initiative aims to reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities, particularly among vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and non-English-speaking residents.
Funds may be used to enhance Public Safety’s efforts of implementing a comprehensive bicycle safety program, focusing on educating the community of safe riding practices and understanding traffic laws. This program is to include the participation of traffic safety fairs, National and State campaigns, pedestrian and/or bicycle safety presentations, bicycle rodeos, among other efforts to promote safe bicycling in the community.
Proposed OTS Grant Funding Allocation:
The Department of Public Safety will allocate the awarded grant funds to support the City's Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program. The funding will be used to enhance public education, traffic safety enforcement, community outreach, and other eligible grant-related activities aimed at improving safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians throughout the City.
Fiscal Impact:
A budget amendment in the amount of $45,000 is required to authorize spending for the grant activities. This is a reimbursement-based grant, and eligible expenses will be reimbursed by the California Office of Traffic Safety
