City Council Meeting
February 1, 2022
22-0027

CITY OF OAKLAND

CITY HALL  ONE FRANK H. OGAWA PLAZA  OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA 94612

COUNCILMEMBER LOREN TAYLOR (510) 238-7006
DISTRICT 6 [email protected]

Date: January 20, 2022
To: Oakland City Councilmembers
From: Councilmember Loren Taylor
Subject: Recognizing National Mentoring Month

Colleagues on the Council:

This Resolution recognizes that January 2022 was National Mentoring Month and uplifts the important role that mentors play in the lives of our youth. I certainly benefitted from the many mentors that volunteered their time to offer advice and experience to me as a young Black male growing up in Oakland. Mentoring helps to bridge the opportunity gap that exists in many communities including Oakland. Representation is important and Black male mentors play a critical role in providing opportunities and guidance to our youth. The statistics tell the story that we all know, when youth are exposed to positive influences and opportunities they will reach their fullest potential and it is our responsibility as City leaders to encourage those positive relationships. While this Resolution mentions several mentoring programs in Oakland, I encourage my City Council colleagues to acknowledge other mentoring programs. I hope that this call to action by the Council will lead to more residents stepping up to mentor youth in the City of Oakland.

I, respectfully request your support of this Resolution to recognize National Mentoring Month in the City of Oakland.

Yours in service of Oakland,

Loren Taylor
Councilmember District 6
