Submit Date: Sep 12, 2020
As a health researcher and epidemiologist, I work to obtain funding, design and execute projects, report results, and implement evidence-based findings into programs and practices. My role is sometimes leader, sometimes partner, and sometimes follower. Regardless of my role, I must work with a variety of stakeholders to identify priorities, articulate problems, build evidence, and translate evidence to solutions that are feasible, acceptable, and sustainable. I have led dozens of teams on projects ranging from $100,000 to several million. Team members need to understand each others' motivations, sensibilities, skills, and ability to contribute, be it through sponsorship, technical qualifications, ability to bring others along, or through other positive contributions. They need to feel comfortable raising difficult issues, and they need to agree upon how they will work together. It is essential that problems and solutions be defined by those who suffer the consequences of the problems and not by well-meaning outsiders. I have been told that I am a close listener who is able to simplify and articulate complex issues. I try to stay focused on the problem at hand, to assure a level playing field, and to seek solutions that are transparent and accountable. Most of my research has been funded by taxpayers, and I am sensitive to the stewardship that is rightfully expected when using public monies. I hope that by working on the SSB CAB, I could use my training and experience to advance the health and well-being of Oakland citizens through programming to improve knowledge, diet, and exercise. I believe these funds are intended for those who have fewer social resources to care for their health, lower access to healthy food, and fewer opportunities for physical activity. As such, I would try to maintain an attitude of service to those who represent these individuals. Research shows that the best solutions are design-based, and I likely would advocate for improved design whenever possible.

I am a born and raised Oakland native with two children, one attending Chabot Elementary school. I am an active participant in my community including the co-chair for the Equity and Inclusion committee on the Chabot PTA. I participate in the Oral Lee Brown Foundation as the board secretary, including a board member for Resources for Community Development and Bay Area Mega Center. I am the founder and co-leader of a Girl Scout Troop in Oakland. I am passionate about doing my part in addressing the adverse health consequences of sugar sweetened beverages not only for my children and the girls in my troop as well as individuals living in vulnerable communities. I am involved in conversations around redistricting as I understand the impact redistricting has on my community. I would love to have the opportunity to participate in the process. I feel strongly that based on my professional and volunteer experience I would be a good fit for both board commissioner positions.
